Time Duration Missing From Bin Icon View

I used to have a time stamp in the bin view on files just to the right of the title. Now it has been replaced by labels, I don't know if its cause I turned labels on or if its because I worked on a team project the other day, but since it has changed and I can't figure out how to change it back. I've talked with support for several hours and they can't seem to give me a solution.  Sorry if I sound annoyed I had made this video for the tech support dude who was waisting my time.

you do know you can control click on any of the column headers in the list bin view and turn any of the columns on or off and you can then drag a column left or right to adjust it's position?  Don't mean to be snarky, just wondering...  And you can save a variety of different bin views (and I think you can even assign shortcut keys to individual bin views...  but I may be having a senior moment)...

Had to hunt around to find, as it's not exactly intuitive but try this:

Change your bin or project window to 'Free form view', select the menu dropdown in the project window (next to the project name) and select 'freeform view options' at the bottom of the list. Now you should be able to change 'Metadata Line 2' to show 'duration' (or other choice). You can also keep or remove 'labels' using the 'label color' checkbox.

Note I'm checking this in Premiere Pro 2021.

I was able to figure out that free-form view on my own - I still don't want to have to use free form view - I would like my bin to go back to normal.

Any other idea why this might be happening? Was it an update or is it just an overlooked setting in the UI

I'm wondering how you got that in the first place in the 'normal' thumbnail icon view? Mine simply show the clip name. I've never seen that time listing before.

I just realized that some projects back in the 2020 version show a running-time number rather than a lable.

I know they've changed label behaviors in 2021 and 2022 even further. I wonder if those changes are the reason?

I apologize that this didn't make it into the What's New notes for the release, but this was an intentional change to Icon View to show the label color of the clip instead of the clip duration. Please let us know what you think of this as a change to Icon View.

Brings up a question though, for many users.

Personally, I prefer the labels as I use them a lot, rarely need to know the run-time of a clip. But many others undoubtedly work differently.

Any possibility we could get choices for the thumb display options? As I can think of several things various users might find helpful.

I prefer to see the run time due to the nature of the footge I edit, a lot of it looks very simliar - but maybe this is a push to use labels as I've never used them before.

Hey, everybody works differently. I've talked with groups at NAB for instance where you'd have a whole shop or post-house group, all taught by the senior editor there ... and every one of them works differently. They may share some things, but as they've learned and grown, they've adopted their own way of doing anything.

I started using labels because it makes it so much faster to group things and bulk apply effects. Like making three different cams much closer by applying tested presets to each set in a bin. Final neutralizing/shotmatching is so much faster.

But there's a lot of other things also. So at times I'll label for this task, then relabel for another. Simply to speed grouping of effects and tasks.

Could you make this an option in the future maybe a toggle? It really messes things up when you have a lot of go-pro footage due to the nature of how they are labeled.

Thanks for clearing that up Matt. I could have been spinning my wheels for hours trying to figure that out. I'm not a fan of this feature at all. Especially during the early stages of an edit, knowing the duration of the clip is paramount to clip identification. It's extra important for identification when matching 2 or more clips from a multicam shoot where the footage may be labled in a confusing or less than optimal way. Please add the clip duration back to the icon view.

as far as i know it is the clip's label color. i don't know how to make the clip duration visible instead.

Yes this got me quite frustrated as well! Very glad to have found this post. When I have a folder of clips that have been split by the camera (i.e. 4gb file limit), I can easily use the clip duration to see where I stopped/restarted recording and merge the clips accordingly. Would definitely appreciate a fix to this 🙂

Hi! Windows 10 Pro.  

No it happen to all content(folders, video, audio, stills, sequences) in Project window in Icon View mod. In Freeform i still can see timecodes... but i like work in Icon View.

Maybe its ok .  but i want to see timecodes without moving mouse from Timeline.. and i can do it only with Freeform view mod... think its really bad "improvement"...

You are correct. Freeform View is the only way to see duration for a clip's icon in the current version.

Sorry about that. The devs know about this issue and they have an internal bug filed.
