Whats the current best method for adding stroke/outline to a layer? Why no effect yet?

So since the inception of the software users have wanted a stroke/outline effect. 
In the latest version, what is your favourite method?

These are the methods I'm aware of

1. Radial Shadow

2. Paint Bucket
3. 4 Drop Shadows
4. Grid effect (no good for cropped layers)

5. Rectangle

6. Other?

Surely this effect would be an easy feature to add and definitely something useful I would imagine, Do users agree?
