I take the opposite view. In my experience, importing via card reader (built-in or usb-attached) is both quicker and safer (and has the other advantage of being bug-free). If I'm asked for a recommendation, I'll always say use a card-reader, which is the method used by the majority of my photographer acquaintances. I spend a great deal of time on various Lightroom forums, trying to help other users with their varied problems. And I can honestly say that the number of problems I've seen, which are directly attributable to importing via direct camera attachment, far outweigh the number of card-reader associated issues. Simon, I've got a user at LRF with a possibly-related issue. In his case the catalog backup stalls 3/4 of the way through the process. He's tried turning off the Optimise and Integrity Check options, but with the same result. It appears to be stalling in the zipping process. His catalog size is 4gb, hence my mentioning it here. Yes. The Raw 9.0 is a plugin for PSCC only, not Lightroom. If you wish to process your images directly in Lightroom, without converting to DNG first, then you have to upgrade Lightroom 5.7.1 to LRCC (2015). If you have the CC subscription, this is a free upgrade. If you're not seeing the LRCC (2015) Install option in the CC desktop app, then try signing out and signing back in. It might be that there are some gaming preferences set on the graphics card (outside Lightroom). As a test, disable Lightroom's use of the GPU (Preferences>Performance tab) to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, you'll need to investigate the graphics card settings. ... View more

If you can't get the "Recover Edges" plug-in to work, then the quickest way out of the problem is to open the images into DPP (where the images aren't cropped), then save them as Tiffs which you can import back into Lightroom. It syncs initially to the Adobe cloud servers, and from there to any suitable mobile device which is logged in to the same account (currently only iPads, but others to follow). Yes, you should see activity on the iPad pretty much at the same time as the upload is progressing (though will depend to some degree on your network connection). Delete All Data means delete all the sync data stored in the Cloud. The original files, with the work that you've done on them on the desktop, will be unchanged. Any edits you made on the iPad and successfully synced back to the desktop will also be retained. I'm also in the UK with typically 40 Mbps down and 7.25 Mbps up. Testing to San Jose produces varied results depending upon which server I use, the fastest one gives me around 38 down and 6.5 up. Ran some tests last night (results probably skewed a little due to hyper-activity on the CC servers!), 800 x 22mp raw files with Smart Previews pre-built took just over 38 minutes to upload, which is 2.88 seconds per image. A second set of 800 images, this time without pre-built SPs took just over 51 minutes, which is 3.88 seconds per image. Running a 4 year-old i7930 with 12gb of RAM, Win7x64. Not sure what that really means without some further testing, though it does seem that if you're only getting 10 seconds per image then there may be some other issue at play rather than just "slow syncing". It's the same procedure in LR4: Start the Watermarks editor, then use the drop-down at top left to select the watermark you wish to delete. Others may not agree with me, but my view is that the primary purpose of a NAS is to enable sharing of data across a Local network. So if there's no requirement for that level of sharing of original image files, what's the point of putting them on a slower (and possibly less reliable) medium? I keep all my image files on internal drives, but even if I couldn't do that I'd use fast external drives (eSata or USB3).
