I think the Push effect would work for you, per MTD. You can change the direction of the push to vertical and should be good to go using the little box above the A/B with 4 arrows

Thanks for the tip(s) RoninEdits, My 64gb's TridentZ at 3200 arrived today. Purchased the ones you linked to. I only went $2.35 over my memory budget! Really sweet looking memory also. The heat spreaders are CNC type of aluminum, where as the Corsair I'm using in my current rig have more of a folded aluminum like stamped from a sheet. Very pleased. And, don't know if it matters but the 4x16's from the two different 32gb packages have 4 sequential serial #'s. Also, I had called Newegg earlier in the day Monday and asked how long the sale would be on for, she said till the 28th and also said there were 32 packages in stock. I was going to hold off, then after a bit I decided to go for it. Shortly thereafter they were marked as out of stock, then they went back on, now with the end date of the sale added, but also up $15.00 per set! Still pretty much the best price I've seen.

Are the multiple clips 'butted together' edited at all? Or do you just want to change formats? If so, you could just drag the individual clips into media encoder and bypass the PP for now?

Got my R5 today. It is much nicer than I thought it would be! I was at Fry's the other day, and looking over their cases, and they were all so flimsy and wobbly I was somehow thinking this might be similar. I am happy to say this is one sturdy case and the sound dampening seems really nice. At least as sturdy as my Antec P183 v3. Thanks very much for the tips! A question on memory. How do you go about looking for it? I see 64gb of memory for ~$400.00 on well known sites but it's not on the QVL, and when I only look for memory on the QVL it's not on sale or I can't even find a vendor selling it? Looking via PcPartPicker they have 64gb (4x16) Corsair, and Corsair has it listed for $399 on their site, but there is no purchase button on that item (only 'find a vendor') and then as I've said above. So, it's a bit frustrating. Any suggestions on how to go about it would be appreciated.

Based on this forum and in particular the comments from RoninEdits and confirmation from Alexander Eberhard above, I purchased a Fractal Design R5 Titanium last night. I'm pretty new to AE, but it seems like your clips/layers end at the 24 (top) and 25 frame marks (lower 2), don't you have to extend them out now?

I'm still using 2017.01, but Alt-Shift-1 brings up the All Panels Workspace Alt-Shift+ 2=Assembly 3= audio 4=color 5=editing 6=effects 7=libraries 8=meta 9=titles I just checked now, and I think you can assign them, look for 'workspace1', 'workspace2', etc... or search for "shift+1"

When looking over video cards, of the same model, it seems there is one which advertises "Overclocked" and the other is standard. It's usually only $20.00 difference, but is it worthwhile to get the 'better' one considering they are overclockable?

I've been looking mostly for 16gb sticks, thinking 4x16gb = 64gb, but there doesn't seem to be very many on the QVL. I'm wondering how often they update that list? So, are you saying if I find a 2 stick version in the qvl, I can get two of those = quad channel? What about 8x8gb? Is the 4x16 preferable?

I posted a question on the BH website, and found out that the ASUS Dual cards (ie: two/dual fans) have a BIOS upgrade which allows for 0db (IE: The fans are off until 60*c is reached). However, I saw RoninEdits post regards the new EVGA ftw2/icx cards, that looks like an interesting option if a 1070 is under consideration rather than the 1060s I've been mostly contemplating. Also, I've been having a rather difficult time finding memory which are on the QVL. Maybe I'm searching for it incorrectly? But I've been looking over modules, especially discounted ones, and have found very few on the list. Alexander Eberhard which gskill did you pick? thanks very much.

Thanks very much Alexander Eberhard and RoninEdits I'll look for the memory sticks again. I found the QVL so will check into that. Seems there are so many choices, and I can't tell what #'s to look for. Is the DDR4 2133 much different than the 3200? Should I look for one speed over another, or a better latency, etc. I think I'm going to go with the R5 and just get a external USB DVD writer and it can be the last one I'll have to buy. From these posts I'm leaning towards the 1060. Very good catch RoninEdits, I thought about that (do the card's fan stop spinning at idel) when I was first reading over the specs, and then I've forgotten it! Yes, I'll have to see about that. I know I don't want three fans, so I may need to change vendors. Though I thought there might be some advantage to using an Asus card with and Asus motherboard, all other things being even.

It may have to do with the built in graphics card in your cpu, and when PP says no cuda it is referring to that card. See if you can disable it in the bios, and pp will then see the 960.

I’ve been following the threads here for some months, and have especially found interesting the comments from RoninEdits and Bill Gehrke thanks for your time and efforts here. February has finally arrived, so I can start getting serious about my new build. I have it mostly sorted it in my head, but could use some expert help such as I’ve seen here. Here’s my starting point Asus x99-Deluxe II Intel Core i7-6850K 3.6 GHz Noctua NH-D15S 140mm CPU Cooler Corsair HXi Series HX850i 850W Power Supply Per my post yesterday I currently have a two Samsung 960’s a 500gb EVO and a 512gb Pro. I’ll probably keep both. 32gb or 64gb of Memory I’m mostly a bang-for-your-buck type guy, and I don’t really have that much video stuff to do, but I like it a lot. I’m on old school / analog editor for many years, and have been enjoying getting better in PP and AE. I have a couple of projects going currently and plan to keep doing this for a while. I tend to keep my rig for some years, currently I’m using my 2011 build with an Asus Deluxe P8Z68, Sandy bridge, I7 2600K, 16GB, 850 EVO, 256gb, NVidia 560ti. I have a modest overclock on this rig, I'll probably do the same with the new one. My main area of question is What memory I should get for it, ie: actual memory sticks, and should I go 32 or 64g Which Case should I get. I prefer a specifically quiet case. Video card, 1060 or 1070 CASE: I’m into quiet cases. I have 3 5.25” bays in use currently, but I could go with 2 and get an external USB DVD writer. Antec P183 v3 I’ve used Antec P180 / 182 in my most recent builds. The P183 v3 seems to be the current Antec case, but not sure they are even making it anymore. Plus, it could use some updating. My plan was to use this since I’m familiar with it, but I could move to something else. I saw that RoninEdits seems to like the Fractal Design. Corsair 330R Quiet Tower Case Has advantage of 3 - 5.25” bays Fractal Design R5 Most up-to-date Only 2 – 5.25” bays Graphics Card Asus Dual OC GeForce GTX 1070 - $398.89 - (DUAL-GTX1070-O8G) or Asus Dual OC GeForce GTX 1060, - $259.99 - (DUAL-GTX1060-O6G) Is it worth the extra $ - performance wise and longevity, considering I probably won’t be upgrading this anytime soon. Following the conversation about a month ago I here regards 960 SSDs I was starting to think I may not get one in time for my build sometime this month and the 'in stock' messages kept changing a B&H so I order one of each, figuring I'd cancel when the first once came in. Last week I got an email that the order had shipped, so now I have two. Any suggestions. I was probably going to go with an 850 for boot, but I could also keep both of these and use it with an Asus x99 Deluxe II as it comes with the extra pcie card. Or I can send one of these drives back, etc.

Hey CloudDisaster, burner21X The problem here looks like a result of the more general problem we discussed here: Where did all the numeric-keypad shortcuts go in Premiere CC 2017? I was told when we were discussing the above, the the default functionality for the Numeric Keypad with NumLock off would be restored in a future upgrade. They didn't make it in 2017.02, so maybe the next one? It would be nice also, if we had the option to program the numeric pad separately with numlock off.

Yes, I believe you are correct when you say you might be 'overthinking it'. SSDs btw run in a TRIM mode, the whole file is erased when a file is deleted. Not like spinning drives where the space is marked as deleted and you can still possibly recover the file. Just erase and proceed...

Thanks Mike, Yes, will almost certainly go to w10 now, thanks for the confidence boost. I read up a bit on that, and it seems to do with "hibernate" I've got that off already in w7 (and have finally forced it off on my 88yo mother's computer cause she kept doing that). So, I can see your point, you've got the hardware to boot really fast, you don't need the artificial fast booting of Windows. Good tip, cheers!

I was thinking the boot up time would be one of the advantages of using the m2 drive for that, as well as loading programs, etc. I've continued with Win7 up to now, but was thinking of moving to Win10 for the next rig. I don't know of the Quick Boot from Win7, but just found this from a google search: http://lifehacker.com/enable-this-setting-to-make-windows-10-boot-up-faster-1743697169 So, you're saying turn this off and turn on the quick boot in the BIOS, sounds good. Looking at the chart Bill just posted, I guess I could go from a single 1TB 960. Though, since I've had the smaller C: SSD I'm kind of used to having the data drive around now. And I like that I can just copy everything over to a new drive, or just swap out the c: drive and continue with the data drive as it is.

Hi Bill and Mike, Interesting thread here. Motivated by this I ordered two 960s, a 500gb EVO and 512gb Pro. Since both are to 'ship sometime soonish' I figured I'd keep the first one or even get both. Mike I am thinking of a rig similar to your basic one, (probably with no spinning drives) 6850 and Asus x99 Deluxe II with the Asus card. If I end up with both drives, I'll probably use the EVO for booting. I rarely go 3 years without refreshing my boot drive as Windows starts getting slugish, so I would replace that one at that time. Bill, have you ever booted with one of the 960s? then use one for your media files, etc? I planning to purchase two new SSDs for the new rig, and the price is not that much greater to make them both 960's instead of a boot SATA III. Then I can use one of my current 256k SATA III drives for quick backups, etc and an external eSATA spinning drive to get the files out of the main box. g

So are the subclips locked into any one particular project? IE: If I go thru the steps to create them, is there some search means available to help find them again, say for a different project. What I'm thinking about it something like Lightroom, how you can put in keywords, and comments and description, etc... and then search for it later. I like that because it saves the tags, etc into the original file, so they are all there for some other program to read. Is there any functionality to do that with the video clips. Just from some quick tests I saw the comments I made to a clip in Prelude can be seen in PP. The thing with that (PR) is, it seems like it's a project also. So, what do the a new crew be doing, making a PR project for each shoot or is it somehow all aggregated so shots can be found over an entire library of files?

Yes, thanks Bill, that would be awesome. I thought there was an Asus expansion card that comes with the x99 Deluxe 2. Is that option for another m2 drive or something else? I thought I saw a picture of your computer with the two m2 drive and the one is in an Asus card. Yes, using a 256mb m2 for os and programs. I would think the computer would boot much faster and load programs much faster and then why not - if the cost is not that much different than having to purchase a 256mb SSD like the 850 pro and using that for os/progams?

Thanks guys, there seems to be a consensus! So, the subclips are a sort of logging of the shots from beforehand. Is there a reason to try out Prelude and then just use the marker notes, or it seems Prelude will create subclips also. In the end, maybe I should just use the footage direct. One 'reel' is 40min, 3 others at 25min. Mostly of 10 / 15 second shots. Many could use warp! I'm an old-school editor but a current computer guy, and having some experience with PP, plus I ran thru the 'Editors Guide to PP' tutorials and have edited several projects together.. In the old days we had significant problems with generation loss, so it's interesting to start thinking about that here in the digital world. I hadn't thought about that for awhile. One other thing, I'll have to buy Neat Video. I see they have different versions for PP and AE, I'd prefer the PP version, but is there much difference in final outcome? thanks again, mp

Hi All, I just had my historical 8mm film transferred to Prores HQ, it's in 4 quite large random files of 8mm reels. I was planning on cutting the reels out into more manageable bits using Quicktime Pro to make break it into the smaller clips. I experimented with Neat Video noise / grain reduction and that really helps out the footage. So, I was thinking of color correcting via cuts to the smaller clips and doing the noise reduction along with it. Then saving them out of PP in DnxHD (on my PC) and then doing the edit using the noise reduced color corrected clips. Otherwise I'd be doing the edit, then applying the color correction and Neat Video, etc all at once. I'm thinking it might be easier to do it the other way. Any comments on that would be appreciated. mp

I'll be doing a new build in Feb or March, and was planning on doing an Samsung 512gb 850 (pro or evo) boot, programs and then a 512gb 960 pro m2 drive for media. Was just wondering though, since I have to buy both new drives... can / should I go with two 960's using one for boot and the other for media, etc? The cost would only be the difference from an 850 to a similar 960. (I'm planning on using an Asus x99 Deluxe 2 with a 6850 processor and Asus 1060 video) Any tips would be much appreciated... mp

I just measured that screen and it's 750x821 so you are out of space. You need a larger display. For now you can TAB once from the Sequence Name field and that is the OK button.
