Only the signer can remove his signature. Since the signature prevents modification of the file (including redaction). If you need to store a redacted version of the file, I suggest scanning a printout and redacting that.

If this is a Digital Signature, and not the last signature in the document, you should be able to see the deleted signature in the signature pane. You can then "view signed document" to roll the document back to an earlier state, before signature deletion. Then save the earlier version. Otherwise, you need to find a saved copy prior to the signature being deleted. Mac "Time Machine" or Windows Archive might have saved the earlier version.

There is an option to Lock Document when signing. If it is a checkbox during signing, don't check it. If it is an authored setting on the signature, there won't be a checkbox and the document will lock. Make all changes before signing.

I'm sorry, but the message is lying. Internally to Acrobat, the only difference between SaveAs and Save a Copy is which PDF is open after the save. SaveAs reopens the file you just saved. Save a Copy saves the file but leaves the original document open. There is no way you can edit a signed file. To remove your signature, right-click on the signature and take the drop-down option to delete it. I've not seen this message except when someone clicks "view signed version" in a signature panel item. That opens an earlier version of the document (i.e. just after that signature was applied) for viewing in read-only mode. Since it's not a file in itself (it's a prefix of the open file), it needs to be saved as a stand-alone file before you can do anything with it. In this case, only SaveAs makes sense.

I disagree with your statement "Acrobat proposes to do it". You can remove the signature if you are the signer. Otherwise, you must go back to the creator or original signer and get an unsigned copy of the PDF. That is "as designed".

Note that you cannot edit page content or images of a signed document. Attempting to do so will invalidate the signature.

The XFA metadata in a PDF may be encrypted, or not, depending on settings when security is set. If the XFA metadata is not encrypted, you can just process the file with an XFA parser. It is not required to open the PDF to do this. Look for <x:xmpmeta>...</x:xmpmeta> as plain text in the PDF

To Save a Copy, do a SaveAs then open the copy you just saved. But I think you are really saying that you can't edit a signed file. That is true, since the signature tells the person viewing the file that the content has not changed. You can only edit before signing.

You can't change the security settings of a signed document because the signature is over the bytes in the file, and removing security (unencrypting the file) changes all the encrypted data to unencrypted which would break the signature. You can only change security settings if there are no digital signatures (certifying or individual).

Adobe Sign can sign with digital signatures on an ipad: https://helpx.adobe.com/sign/using/adobe-sign-ios.html#DigSig The certificate must reside in a remote "cloud" server, and can't be a local smart card (e.g. a CAC card). The service and certificate to use is selected at signing time, so multiple users can share the same device. This capability is not available for the stand-alone Acrobat on an iOS device.

Well, that isn't true. You can add as many digital signature fields as you like. You can't insure that a file is only opened by one person at a time, because there is no communication between the two Open actions. However, Adobe Sign provides for multiple digital signature fields, and coordinates any collisions that may occur if two people try to sign at the same time.

Certify the document with a digital signature. The certification status will show in the top bar. If the file is modified, the signature will be invalid, and the document shown as invalid.

There is an option to "Lock" the document after a Digital Signature, and that should be used with the last signature. Note that flattening a signed document will invalidate all Digital Signatures. The Digital Signature itself, if the document is locked, is evidence that the document has not been tampered with -- the signature will be invalid if the document is changed.

For most Widget types (Stamp, etc.) it is possible to have multiple copies of the Appearance, so that one copy of a Stamp could be made to appear on 200 pages. Unfortunately for you, Digital Signatures are the sole Widget type for which multiple appearances are not allowed. You would need to sign the document 200 times, which would make the document huge, and the processing time for validation unbearable. See if you can get permission to use a Stamp on each page, with a single Digital Signature for the entire document.

Last reply: You have all the tools you need to write a PKCS#11 module for Acrobat. You just need to understand the interfaces between Acrobat and PKCS#11, and the PKCS#11 module and the token. All the algorithms you need are there, but some coding is required. If you can't figure it out yourself, you will need to call in a consultant to help.

What you are missing is that Acrobat is not going to change. You can do any required rewriting in your PKCS#11 module. If Acrobat asks for RSA_PKCS it will send you a hash (not a padded hash, since the padding length is determined by the RSA key size). Even if it did send you a padded hash, you could just remove the padding to get the hash itself. What you need to do, then, is perform the PKCS padding and send a padded hash to the token with an RSA_X_509 method. Then what you get back is just the same as if the token could handle RSA_PKCS directly. Much of this information is available via Google. Many token providers have made this work. There are folks who read this forum who could write the PKCS#11 module for you. For a fee, of course.

CKM_RSA_X_509 encrypts (signs) the payload. If you send it a padded hash, then the result is the same as CKM_RSA_PKCS without the padding (provided you did the PKCS#1 pad correctly). You then take the result of the encrypt and format it properly as an RSA signature. That's why there is your PKCS#11 module sitting between Acrobat and the token. Just a bit of coding required. Take the hash given to you by Acrobat, pad it, encrypt, format the output as a PKCS#1 signature. If c_sign gives you the document bytes, you do the hash yourself before padding and encrypting. You aren't the first PKCS#11 implementation for Acrobat.

If you are not sending the entire document for hashing (which is not usually efficient for a token), you need to send either the hash (using CKM_RSA_PKCS) or the padded hash (using CKM_RSA_X_509). In the latter case, you generate the hash and pad it to the modulus length using PKCS#1, then call CKM_RSA_X_509 which just does the final encryption.
