Yes, you're talking about "graphic frames" (or image frames) and those boxes are called handles. There are corner handles and side handles. The handles do disappear when you move the object. However, I'm not sure why you want to see them. If you want to make a frame align to a guide, you can just drag the edge of the frame to the guide and it should "snap" to the guide. If it does not snap, you may need to turn on View > Grids & Guides > Snap to Guides. Also, you can center objects on a guide in the same way… it will snap to the center point. If your Smart Guides are turned on (same submenu) then you can also use the green and pink guides that flash on and off to align your objects. ... View more

I don't think you should be doing this with GREP Styles. GREP Styles are good for applying formatting (character styles) to a word or a sentence, not to a whole paragraph. Does this text frame have 3 paragraphs in it? If so, I think it would be better to assign 3 paragraph styles. For example: entry_description, options, durations. You can set the "Next Style" for entry-description to options, and the Next Style for options to durations. Then make an object style (in the Object Styles panel) that applies the entry_description paragraph style AND turn on the "Apply Next Style" checkbox. Then, when you apply the object style, it will automatically apply all three paragraph styles for you. ... View more

As Chad said, copy and paste from Word should only be a last resort. File > Place is certainly better. However, another option here would be to search for all the hyphens inside words and delete them. You could do that with Find/Change by choosing the GREP tab, then searching for (?<=\w)-(?=\w) and then leaving the Change field blank. That searches for hyphens that are between two letters. Of course, it would also delete hyphens that might be correct, like "in-between" so you need to be careful. ... View more

This is extremely common when dealing with non-English fonts in an English version of InDesign. First of all, I need to say: I have no idea why Barbara Ash would recommend changing something in the export PDF dialog box. This has nothing to do with that. The issue is that there are fonts and then there is how text is encoded. It's a little hard to explain… There are a few things you can try. In general, copy and paste from Word or most other programs doesn't work very well. However, you might try to import the text from a web browser.
