I would try these things, in order: I would look to see if you have any commercial plug-ins that need to be updated. For example, font management plug-ins are notorious for this kind of thing. Rebuild your preferences settings. This doesn't fix everything, but it can clean up a bunch of weirdness. This is especially true if the problem started soon after upgrading your version of InDesign. Minion Pro is the core "default font" that InDesign requires. All new documents begin with Minion Pro. If you do not want Minion Pro to be your default font for a document, you can change it by editing Basic Paragraph Style. Or, it is better to create a new style and apply that (click it when no objects are selected on the page). It's actually a bit harder than you'd expect in InDesign. First of all, the Page Trim layer you see is not part of InDesign… it was probably created by whomever made the document. To change the size of the document, you probably want to use File > Document Setup. But then you'll probably have to select all the pages in the Pages panel (or just the master page at the top of the Pages panel, if there is just one) and then choose Layout > Margins and Columns, and change the margins to something smaller… and turn on Layout Adjustment to ensure it changes the text frames on those pages. Even if the style names are different in the two files, they may appear to be similar (or nearly similar) when you combine them. The reason: often people base their paragraph styles on "Basic Paragraph Style." You might be able to do it by creating a table of contents, and then using the GREP tab inside the Find/Change dialog box to rearrange the columns and get rid of the text you do not need. I'm going to politely disagree with Bob here… (hi Bob!) 🙂 There IS an InDesign issue… when you export an InDesign file and you know you're going to want to copy text out of the PDF, then you absolutely want to turn on "Create Tagged PDF" in the export PDF options dialog box. If it is disabled, then copying text from the PDF is a total pain. Of course, if the headings can actually be built into the same paragraph as the main text, then it is much easier! In other words, you can just type "Heading[tab]paragraph text" and then add two bits of formatting to the paragraph: a nested style that applies the heading formatting "up to" the tab, and a hanging indent. While it seems like this should be very simple to accomplish, it isn't. One old method is to set the heading paragraph style to have a negative baseline shift — literally just pushing it down a full line to align with the text to the right. (The main paragraph text would have a large left indent, of course.) I would probably just draw out 2 frames on the master page, select them and choose Object > Fitting > Frame Fitting Options, then choose Fit Content to Frame from the Fitting popup menu. Now you can return to the document page, and place the PDF with the Show Options checkbox turned on, so you can choose all the pages you want from the PDF. That loads up the place cursor with the pages… Now you can just click, click, click all the pages (adding pages as necessary with a Command-Shift-P or Ctrl-Shift-P). Each time you click on a frame, it places another page and automatically scales it down to size. ... View more

Here's a kind of crazy technique that we used on a book project: You insert "invisible" characters before the character you want to hang, and then use giant negative kerning to "pull" the glyph into the margin.
