For print work it is the general rule of thumb that Photoshop images should be imported into InDesign at 100% with a resolution of 300 ppi. I tried to duplicate your problem using (100%/300 ppi) images that had been silhouetted in Photoshop and they looked as good as when printed directly from Photoshop. I assume that you've been creating your documents with "Primary Text Frame" in your New Document dialog. This puts a text frame on your default Master page that is set for Smart Text Reflow. It can be identified by the icon that appears when it is selected on the Master page as shown in the screen shot below: Any other text frame set up on the Master will have an icon like the screen shot below and will not be automatically set for Smart Text Reflow: When you try to autoflow text in your document pages as you describe then the default Primary Text Frames would prevail. You can, however, make your text frames that are part of your layout into the Primary Text Frames by clicking on the icon shown in the second screen shot with the regular selection tool on the first of your custom text frames. It will then become primary and can be linked to other custom text frames on your master. Delete the original default Primary Text Frame and you should be ok. ... View more

The first thing you should always do when InDesign starts acting wonky is to trash the preference files. With a Finder window open and InDesign closed put your finger on the Option key (on a Mac) and with the Home Icon clicked go under the Go menu, choose library, click on Preferences and delete the highlighted items "Adobe InDesign" and "com.adobe.InDesign.plist". I just want to add a small bit to what I said above. First I agree with the other respondents that you should talk to your printer about what they need. Secondly I want to clarify about the way to indicate fold versus cut lines. I work in a very large New York agency where we deal with vendors from all over the world. We receive die lines from all types of printers and also create many of them ourselves. Over the years most of the die lines we've received from outside sources used the dashed lines for folds and solid lines for cuts. We've also received many die lines which used separate colors to define the folds and cuts. In our agency we've decided that the dashed line/solid line method allows for more instant recognition of the difference between the lines than having to check a swatch panel to see which is which. Traditionally fold lines are made dashed and cut lines are solid for a die strike. Most of what you've done is correct. As long as you have the die line set to overprint you don't have to uncheck print layer. Then you can send the files to the printer with the die line in position. If the printer is requesting the job to be sent as a press quality pdf then send him two pdfs. One with the die line in position and one without. The only other thing I would do is save the die line from Illustrator as an .ai file rather than an .eps. It is illustrator's native format and is better handled by all versions of InDesign. Just one last thought, make sure that the color you've defined for your die line is set to spot and is not used anywhere else in the job. ... View more

When I look at the outside cover it appears to be centered on a page with equal margins left and right of the image and top and bottom. The inside cover does not appear to be set up in the same way. Because the inside has to back-up the outside exactly it is imperative that whatever size you made the document page and however it is placed on that page for the outside must be exactly the same—that is centered top and bottom and on the left and right. In the screen shot above I took your inside cover and using the control panel I was able to determine that it's overall dimension is 29.8 x 17.65. I then made my document page 31.8 x 19.65. It was then simple to again use the control panel to place the art 1 inch from the left and one inch from the top (note the reference point icon on the left of the control panel) which centers the art exactly. Doing the same for the outside cover should assure that they will line up correctly. When you do this make sure that the bleed is temporarily pulled in as this should all be done to the overall trim size. After it's centered make sure to restore the bleed. Note also that you actually need bleed on the right of the dark blue rectangle in the upper right. What he means is that the art for inside cover should be positioned on the page exactly like the front cover was because when he prints them they will be on opposite sides of the same piece of paper and need to be aligned for when they are trimmed. You have the front cover exactly centered both side to side and top and bottom. Do the same with the inside cover and you should be good to go. ... View more

Usually this can be fixed by Force Quitting InDesign and just trying it all over again. To Force Quit type Option-Command-esc (on a Mac) and choose InDesign in the Force Quit List. If this doesn't work deleting your InDesign preferences might be necessary. ... View more

In this case I think that you can provide him with One pdf for the front and back of the cover and another for the rest of the brochure in spreads. Also provide him with the pdf of the front and back cover without the die lines. I am assuming that this brochure is to be saddle-stitched (bound by staples). If it was to be spiral-bound then it might have to be done as single pages. The spreads that you will be providing will be in what is called reader-spreads but the printer should not have trouble making them printer spreads for production. Good Luck. ... View more

I notice that there is a space before the unwanted paragraph symbol while there is no extra space before the correct ones. If this is consistent throughout then a  global Find/Change could do this task simply. Set up in the Find field space^p and in the Change field just a space. It sounds like you're trying to just pick up what the printer has sent you and output it. What you actually have to do is somehow extract the die line from what he sent and set it up on a layer on an InDesign page that is the same size as the perimeter of the die line on its own layer. Lock that layer. create a new layer for the art and put that layer below the die line. Then copy and paste the art from the original InDesign file into position relative to the die line. I am assuming that the file the printer sent is full size, by the way. Once you have all of the art in position you will not need to have crop marks for it as the die lines themselves serve that function. If the printer wants a second pdf without the die line simply shut off the die line layer and export it as a pdf. If the die line is not done full size you may have to ask the printer—nicely— for a full size copy of the die line. If he sends it to you as a pdf, open it first in Illustrator and save it as an .ai file before placing it into the InDesign file. ... View more

What the printer is requesting is for you to set up this part of the job in the actual way that will be trimmed folded and glued using a die-strike. Die strikes are used when the content is to be printed on something other than just a rectangular page. The die strike is usually drawn precisely in Illustrator and then placed into an InDesign file on a page that has been sized to match the outer perimeter of the die strike on its own layer. The InDesign content is then placed on its own layer(s) in the exact position that it will be printed on the die. If the printer has supplied you an already drawn die strike open it in Illustrator and save it as an .ai file and proceed as above. If the printer has not provided the die it will take a knowledge of how to draw precisely in Illustrator along with the exact dimensions needed. Generally a die strike will use solid lines for anything that is to be cut and dashed lines for anything that is to be folded. Missing or greyed out options in dialog boxes and panels may be a problem solved by deleting InDesign caches. To do this on a Mac open your Home folder and with your finger on the option key go under the Finder Go menu and choose Library. Have you tried it with more than one document? Have you tried copying and pasting the entire contents of a page and using the Paste in Place command (under the Edit Menu) into the same size page in the new document? When you have tried moving a page to a new document did you do it using the Page Panel method? The way to do this is to position the old document over the new document (which is set to the same page size) so that you can see both documents and select the pages you want to move in the Pages Panel and dragging from the Panel itself onto the pasteboard of the new document below. You will be asked where in the document you want the pages placed and when you click OK the pages from the old will become a part of the new document. A master page in InDesign is where elements that are going to be used in multiple places within a document (page numbers, borders, etc.) are placed. You can tell if any have been set up in your document by opening the Pages Panel. You'll notice that there is an area above the document pages (the ones that are numbered 1,2, etc). There should be pages in that area that will be labelled [None] and A-Master (unless the person who created the file has retitled the A-Master to something else). If there is a Master Page (or Pages—there can be as many created as needed) then global changes can be applied there and they will appear in all of the document pages as have the Master applied.
