Unless your colleague used one of the brand new features introduced today, you should be able to convert that file and continue working on it. I do want to say that it's really not a good idea to move to a brand new version on the first day of a release. The first release from any vendor—not just Adobe—tend to be buggy. Or maybe it's best to post that final sentence on a new thread.    As for: What I mean is one text flow, not one story. I guess it's probably impossible to separate the two, so I'll probably have to split the story per page as the pages are laid out now; then I'll have to figure out how to export them all as a continuous story. I'm unclear how you are differentiating flow from story. In my (albeit little) brain, a FrameMaker text flow is the exact same thing as an InDesign story, so to me they are synonyms.   What you are asking for is FrameMaker's old (and now deprecated) Freeze Pagination command. Invoking it would make all auto-connected frames in a flow/story disconnected and overset text moved to point pages. For example, edits to a frozen page 35 would be numbered 35.1, 35.2, etc. Unfreezing would reconnect the pages and the page numbers would return to normal. I'm wondering if this need in your documentation stems from use of this feature many years ago.    Fast forward to 2025 and InDesign: you can break each page into into its own story with the SplitStory script that is included in the Application folder. Hi @claire_3045:   This is a great time for a gentle reminder: implement a good backup system (to a cloud service like dropbox or to a network drive or a thumb drive). Regularly save the file under new names in one of those locations so that if the file crashes again and your can't recover it, you can open the most recent back-up and pick up from there. Hi @david mcnicholas:   As per the other experts, a table of contents (TOC) and an index are two separate components of a book.   A TOC is chronological list of headings and goes in the front of a book. An index is an alphabetical list of topics, and is added to the end. An index takes a lot more time to set up.   However you are looking for an alphabetical list of heads, and that is an option for a TOC. What I think you are missing is: you must designate each level as alphabetical for a multi-level list like yours (you are calling in 3 heads: style name: Heading 2, style name: Heading 3 and style name: Heading 4) are alphabetized within their sections.    In my demo below, I generate the TOC as an index three times. I used lettered entries to make it easier to follow: The first time has alphabetize disabled for all levels. The Index exactly matches the two-level list of heads (chronological). The second time I alphabetize the top level (style name: Heads), the 2nd level remains chronological. The third time I alphabetize the 2nd level heads (style name: Subheads).   ~Barb   ... View more

My two cents: many features are included in both Illustrator and InDesign, but work differently.    You may find drag and drop colors useful to get where you want to go. You can drag saved swatches, but also just color that appears at the top of the Swatches panel (stroke or fill). Until then, I am picturing four subheads on a single body page, and that you want to list all four in the running head? Is that right?   In traditional book layout, we normally just pull the first subhead into the running head to alert the reader which section they are in. In a reference guide like a dictionary or telephone book, we pull the first and last entries to show the alphabetical range included on each individual page. Thank you for the screen shots, @hendy_5450 —this is a display performance setting. Somehow, your settings were changed to Fast Display.    The controls are in three places: Object > Display Performance > High Quality/Typical controls the view single selected image View > Display Performance > High Quality/Typical controls the view of all images in the document Preferences > Display Performance > High Quality/Typical controls the default for all documents   This is a confusing feature because a.) the controls are three places (pick either View as per @Randy Hagan  or Preferences as per @Mike Witherell to restore the view) and b.) this only impacts the display of the images on screen. Make them all like InDesign for example, and there will be furious Illustrator and Photoshop users. No one likes change.   The way I see it, a.) there's no way for Adobe to please all of us and b.) forcing myself to remember the differences keeps my aging mind active. Most of us who volunteer (but not all) are Adobe Community Experts, vetted by Adobe and you can feel safe sharing a file with us. Look for the purple/white star on our images, and the designation under our names. FWIW, Mike is a highly-valued member of our community, and someone I would trust with my files, and more.    As an extra level of safely, you could save a copy of the file, remove everything but the variable and the paragraph you are referencing and then share it.
