P: Blank home screen, no recent files - EVERY 3 DAYS for over a year!

Hi - I have had enough now. Seriously. My recent files and home screen are blank (missing recent files) every single 3 days, like clockwork FOR OVER A YEAR! I am practically demented now trying to ofix this permanently. Renaming UXP folders to either .old or ~UXP - does not work as a permanent fix. I cannot be expected to rename these folders every 3 days.

I have had an agent remotely access my PC and he just did the same thing, renamed folders. I have used the Adobe clean-up tool, uninstalling Photoshop repeatedly, downloading again etc. Nothing is worklng.

I do not use the Cloud to save my work, only specific folders on my PC (windows 11)

There has to be a permanent fix for this, it has been going on for over a year like this and is driving me insane.

Please help with a permanent fix.

My preferences are correctly set up. I am always updated to latest version.

My recent files simply disappear from the list under "Recent Files" and on the home screen when opening PS up each day. Everey 3 days like clockwork. It has to be fixed. Aaaaarrrrgghhh........

Hi all, thank you for your input and help. Apologies for my delay in responding but even though I have "Email me when someone replies" ticked, I was not emailed or informed.

I always update my Photoshop and Camera Raw as soon as notified there are updates available, and am currently on version 26.8.0 as of today.

How many updates have we had in the past year, and this has been consistently happening throughout all of them, its over a year this has happened, every 3 days like clockwork.

I have run the Adobe CleanUp tool given to me by one of the many agents I have tried to get help from. Same thing. Fine for 2 days, 3rd day...gone.

Nothing even in "Recent Files" in the top left menu. Folder is greyed out and list is blank like there's been no work done.

I work every day, and most often through the night too, and its just quicker for me to select one of my works in the home screen, and have always done so since I have been using PS its never been a problem until approx a year or more ago.

I started using PS in 1998 so am very used to it...except this. I have tried absolutely everything.

Renaming folders as per Adobe advice from using .old to ~uxp...neither fixes it permanently.

Agent remotely connected and all he did was rename folders, another agent recently told me to sign in as administrator and see if it continued happening, but that just took me to a godawful windows/microsoft screen with a load of trending microsoft rubbish on it and it would not find photoshop anywhere, he never contacted me again having been cut off when he told me to connect as admin. I am aftraid the agents are well-meaning but their knowledge base for this issue is very poor.

I have reset my preferences multiple times over this past year, using Adobe's steps. I have uninstalled the entire app, deleted all files and folders, started from scratch again and again and again.

As I say, everything is fine and dandy....but only for 2-3 days then recent files disappear from the screen as well as the menu list.

I have loads and loads of memory:

I can understand that you're frustrated, but I don't see this behaviour on my machine. So it's not really a bug, this depends your installation.

In a First step try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps described here:

It's recommended to backup your settings before resetting the preferences.

Please provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the Photoshop menu item Help > System Info. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

This problem was reported in version 26.6 and was resolved in a later release. If you're not already using the latest version of Photoshop, we recommend updating it and seeing if the issue persists. What version of Photoshop are you using? I recall this happening to me in an older version but it was subsequently fixed with an update.

The recent file list is part of the application preferences (the file MachinePrefs.psp to be exact).

Two reasons your files would not appear in the recent list is that the preferences have been reset or that they did not save properly in the first place.

Preferences are saved to disk when you close PS. If PS crashes the prefs will not be saved and things like your recent file list will be incorrect on next launch. Also, security restrictions can prevent the files from saving correctly.

Based on your description, my guess is you are not closing Photoshop before changing locations. The system goes to sleep, shutting down Photoshop, and the prefs don't save.

Hello and thanks for the response. It does seem to be the case, I don't ever let my computer go to sleep and I always close PS with the X button in the upper right corner (I'm on Windows). But knowing Windows and how apps run, it might have been the case that PS just didn't close properly. It's kinda embarassing that recent files are handled this way, I'd expect better of Adobe.

I know that people had this issue in the past but it was so long ago and apparently it still persists, which is unacceptable for a product which costs this much money.

I've been using the Suite for almost 2 months and sometimes when I open PS I don't see the recent files in the home screen, or in the File > Open Recent option. They are empty.

The files are on the local drive, the same drive where PS is installed and they are still stored in the same location. I literally saved my work on the files, closed the program, then traveled from work to home and opened it at home. Since I'm used to working on several files at once due to the nature of my project, locating them and opening them by hand is tedious and nearly infuriating.

I'm using Windows 11 on a brand new laptop.

Any solutions, please?
