FrameMaker

If I create a new empty page in FM, using px instead of mm/cm/in, FM automatically uses a dpi setting of 96 to convert the size, so I end up with a 20" wide sheet for a page size based on the Full HD format (1920 x 1080 px). In e.g. Adobe InDesign, I can adjust the dpi setting so that the whole thing is no wider than a A4 page in size, but in FrameMaker I haven't found any way to adjust it. Am I missing something, or can this setting simply not be changed? FM version used: 15.0.5.838 (2019 release) 

I have the following, simplictic table, in a document:(text is the paragraph style currently applied to each cell).In my Conversion Table, I have the following rules:When I apply the Conversion Table to my document, I get the following resultMy problem is that the Image element should be wrapped in the ScreenshotCell (TC) element and not the default CELL (TC) element.  For some reason, the highlight conversion rule is completely ignored and I can't figure out why.

Hi! I'm quite new to structured framemaker and I'm considering migrating legacy unstructured documentation to XML. In legacy documentation along with ordinary tables I have Note and Attention messages in a table format:The icon is a paragraph format with a Frame above Pgf., and the table has shadingWhen I generate a conversion table, framemaker creates only one set of elements for table cells, rows, etc. I'm a bit confused about how do I handle those tables both in conversion table and in EDD file so that I can save the converted file to XML, then load it and get the same table format? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Is there an alternative to using a Conversion Table to apply structure to an unstructured document?I have a simple document, with 3 headings and a table:(So the paragraphs styles are easilty identified, the text is the actual paragraph style applied)In the EDD that will be used, each Heading is a new Section. It takes several minutes to open any document that is full of references to image files. The problem appears to be related to the extreme level of file attribute reads ("attr get" column when running fsstat -F 3) and lookup operations the application insists on performing before the document is available for editing. This is completely different from the latency seen when each page and new images are loaded. I typically see >300 attr gets, and >400 lookup ops *per second* when opening one of these files, so I could see over 100,000 of each before the file comes up. This is for a 50 page document with ~3 images per page. I looked into whether this was a hard disk latency issue, since it would take a spinner significant time to respond to all of these requests, even with small data per request, but it looks like virtually all of the requests were being handled by the filesystem cache (RAM). In developing our EDD, I've converted our Paragraph Styles to Format Change Lists, simply because all our Paragraph Styles are really variations of a single base Pararaph Style. Is this the best approach? Or is it better to keep our current Paragraph Styles and use the ParagraphFormatTag property instead?Historically we've always had problems enforcing paragraph styles, instilling (or at least trying to) in our writers not to make changes to the pre-defined Paragraph Styles. We want to prevent our writers from making these changes and enforce the pre-defined styles.

Having spent the last two days trying to creat a conversion table to apply structure to our unstructured documents, only to have it apply the correct structure 40% of the time (due to the position of the element in the structure being dependant on the context in which it is used), I'm curious to know if there is an alternative/easier/better way of applying structure to an unstructured document without doing it manually.

In our EDD, we have Chapter as the highest-level element.Each Chapter can contain multiple Section elements.Each Section element contains a Heading element (containing Level context rules) and a Paragraph Element. In turn, each Section element can also contain a Section element, up to 6 levels deep (including the first level).In our unstructured documents, we have a different Paragraph Style for each Heading level (H1 - H6).I've created a Conversion Table to apply structure to one of our unstructured documents as a test. I have no problems wrapping our Heading Paragraph Styles into the Heading element. My problem is when I have lower level headings (H2 - H6). These are wrapping in individual Section elements, rather than (sub)Section elements. In testing the problem I reported in Bug where the Element Validation panel/pod is completely absent I am repeatly running the process to add and remove line numbers. This was working as expected up until after I created the aforementioned post. Today, with 2019, I end up with a corrupted display as shown below:Ctrl+l does not work. If the document is closed and then re-opened, the display is still corrupted.This does not occur with 2020 with update 1 (16.0.1.817). The only change is that I installed a Windows update first thing this morning KB5003173. There are no reports that I can see that report graphics problems related to this update. When the link to Update 8 is working I will try that to see if the problem is fixed. Jon

In earlier versions of FrameMaker, the contents of the Console window was written to this file in the FrameMaker User folder: consfile.txt. But with versions 2019 and 2020, this file doesn't have messages that I specifically write to the Console using ExtendScript. Any help would be appreciated.

I think FrameMaker can use @href for referenced images when writing a structured file to XML, but I cannot find the method to force FM to do so. It keeps writing <!ENTITY> definitions and referencing them instead. This causes unnecessary complications in post-processing the XML to DITA. It might be trivial, but I have no time working my way through all the specs in the Structured App Guide and Reference. If someone can tell me what to add to the read-write rules (or the DTD, or the EDD, or wherever) that would be really helpful. 4everJang

I created TOC and it was very ugly and primitive us usual, so I decided to import settings an other properties from a good TOC that I have on my hard-drive. The good TOC looks like that:My TOC after the import, updating the Book and TOC and redefining the Paragraph catalog elemets looks like that. Sequential pagination is absent at all, the number of pages are not in line, there is not breadcrumbs lines. What is going on? What my TOC does not look like the imported one?

Hi Everyone, I am trying to figure how to resolve the error "Format change lists that are referenced but not defined." Can anyone provide assistance. The error is referencing "HeadTitleText" in my EDD and is appearing in my Element Catalog Manager report after importing the Element Definitions into a template.  Thank you for your assistance.Edrice Angry

While trying to understand the properties of the Chapter Title's shadow in the sample below:      I found that it has some kind of settings in the Master Page view, see below:   But what it is? How is this "Running H/F 1" element called? How can I create or edit it? Is there some panel or toolbar to create or edit (delete) this element? I looks like a variable, because I see it in the Variables panel.

Friends and gurus,Since some days (the last Windows 10 update?) I can not enter a backslash (\) into text in FM-15.I have Swiss-German keyboard layout.No other application is affected by this, including other FM versions. Hence it is not a keyboard problem.In FM-15 I can enter this backslash character in dialogue fieldsIn FM-15 I can enter any other ALTGr - charater, namely ¦@#¬|¢´~[]{} into the textI can not enter this backslash character in FM-15 into a new document (hence it is not a problem of a particular document)Neither restarting FM, nor restarting Windows 10 lets the problem go away.After setting CtrlAltIsAltGr to ON in maker.ini I hoped to use this bypass for ALTGr - but it does not  help either.I can copy/paste existing backslashes in the text.Siwtching to German keyboard layout lets me enter all characters in any application except FM-15 text (remember, it works in dialogue entry fields).→ What could be the reason for this strange behaviour?

Aight here's the sitch.  I'm working with Hotspots within an HTML5 document using a Specify Named Destination - Hypertext marker.I've set them up inside of Framemaker using an unstructured book (DITA has been causing me enough problems for one week).  Inside Framemaker, the Hotspots work fantastically, they also work perfectly when outputting to PDF. The big issue i'm having is that when outputting to HTML5 somehow that link breaks, I recieve the ominous error that the destination link "May have been moved, edited or deleted"...  However, those destinations still exist and open fine when using the table of contents.  Continuing from there I also have issues with image quality, the hotspots somehow seem to annihilate and crunch the images i'm using to paste...  Any advice, tips, a saviour to come from out of the skies to answer to me pleas ?  

We are pursuing the purchase of AEM.  Currently we publish PDFs.  My gut tells me that we need FM in order to address some of our legacy content, such as complex tables (rotated text, nested tables, images in table cells, etc.). Can anyone help me identify the specific reasons why we may need FM?  I've asked this question several times to others (not in this Community), and I always get a general answer, "most people use it because they have been using it, and it is familiar to them."  I am looking for specific benefits that I can use as justification, if necessary. Thank you. 

One of the (many) features I like in FM2019 is the ability to insert an image without the need to insert an anchored frame first (one is created automatically). As we  move to Structured FM, I've run into a hurdle with inserting images.We have inline images (appearing on the same line as text). These vary in size and resolution. In unstructured, once the images is inserted, the auto-created anchored frame is resized to fit the image size and the Distance from Baseline is changed to -3.5pt.In moving to structured, I can create a graphic element that is set to ImportedGraphicFile. This work well to insert the image. However, the Distance from Baseline of the anchored frame still needs to be manually changed.I tried using a graphic element that is set to AnchoredFrame. This creates the anchored frame using an Object Style with the correct Distance from Baseline. However, once the image is inserted, the anchored frame isn't resized to fit the image and needs to be manually done. Once

I need to insert a URL to an external website into a document. What is the best way to configure a Hypertext element for this purpose? I can create a Marker element, but I can't quite figure out how to use it.
