I've seen instructions for using side heads or table formats. Is there any other way to get an icon to appear to the left rather than just above or below?
I am an experienced FrameMaker user who works with unstructured FrameMaker 2015 (using Windows 7) and keep it up-to-date. The issue is that my FM files frequently disappear so that I have to copy the .backup file and create a new .fm file in order to continue working. I'm not doing anything weird, it just happens every once in a while when I try to save a file. For example, I may have been working on a file for several days, or weeks, and it saves fine. Then it decides to disappear. I get the following save error message:"File C:\Users\....\[name of file].fm has changed on the disk since you last opened or saved it. Someone else has probably modified the file. Do you want to save it anyway?" [I am the sole owner of this file, no one else has access to it. I click OK to save it.]Then the file disappears. My working folder in Window's Explorer shows the .backup file. Plus 4 new files: [name of file].fm.DD2[name of file].fm.EEC[name of file].fmF28[name of file].fm.lckWhy does this keep ha
I am using FM11 and this doc is the source doc when I convert to online help using webworks epublisher pro.The application that the help is for is accessible through a url that is an internal web application, for example the absolute url is:https://online.company.com/mds/ops/operations.htmlbut the developer is telling me the root can change and that I should make this a relative link, such as://mds/ops/operations.htmlNot sure how to do this with the Special-Hyperlink tool. Normally I select "Command: Go to url", and input [[message URL https://company.com/mds/ops/operations.html]]How would I make this a relative link? I tried //mds/ops/operations.html, but it did not work,Please advise.Thanx,Bill
Hello,I'm a dummy with scripting. I hope some experts can help me.I'm working with FM11 and extendscript. Now we have to insert metadata into the file info like "Author", "Title", "Keywords",....As far I found the way to do it!#target framemakervar doc = app.ActiveDoc; var info = doc.PDFDocInfo;var doctype = prompt("Possible cases: Installation manual, Operation manual, Installation and operation manual, Installer reference guide, User reference guide, Installer and user reference guide","Installation manual","Please input the type of manual");info.push ("Author"); info.push (doctype); doc.PDFDocInfo = info;Imagine that I run the script again, fill in a new entry in the inputbox, then the new entry does NOT overwrite the existing entry in the FM document. Can somebody tell me (in dummy javascript language and step-by-step), how I can solve this issue for me?Kind regards
Jeff, In Re: Disappearing FM 2015 File (message 10), you asked "Do all your docs have imported graphics (btw, not best practices) ....?"I was surprised at the parenthetical remark. Advantages of imported graphics include:They help modularize a publishing process so that a graphic artist can concentrate on drawings without needing to learn an other aspects of the publishing process (such as how to use FrameMaker) while a technical writer need not remember to import new graphics each time an update becomes available.Furthermore, if the publishing organization or its customer requires a database of graphics, it is easy to access graphics from the database or to create a database from the imported graphics in the FrameMaker document.A generated list of referenced graphics makes it easy to confirm that all required graphics are included in a document, that no graphic is unnecessarily used multiple times, and that all graphics are stored at the appropriate location.Yes, updates t
Hi All,Creating a simple script to import a graphic into an anchored frame document. All is working fine, but I cant find a way to read the DPI from the raster image so I can modify the now hard-coded value on lines 10-11.I found: Constants.FS_InsetRasterDpi, but this seems to be for SVG data.I assume it has something to do with the Imported Graphic Scaling dialog (see image below).Any ideas? Thanks in advance. if(myFrame != null){ //only proceed if valid frame var props = new PropVals(); var strFilename = ""; props = GetImportDefaultParams(); var index = GetPropIndex(props, Constants.FS_HowToImport); if(index > -1) props[index].propVal.ival = Constants.FV_DoByRef; //import by Reference &nb
These are some of the items that I would like to see added to the product.1. The ability to have multiple page sizes in one document, set by master pages. Example, and 8.5"x11" and a 11"x17" master page option in one document, versus having to make two separate documents.2. Alphanumeric page numbering.3. Numbering properties to allow for 00 numbering. 00,01..etc.4. A way to update only page numbering through out the book with out it changing the rest of the numbering properties (read: wont knock out a numbering property format set to Text. If number 2 and 3 were available, then it wouldn't be a big deal)5. Additional building blocks for autonumbering, similar to Variables definition list, or the ability to add a variable tag to the autonumber field.6. Autonumbering that will allow for text wrapping, and coded returns to be placed (like tab or bullet).Having used Quicksilver as well, these are two items that are in that software, that I would like to have in Framemaker.7. A document map
Hello,Currently using FM11 and creating unstructured documents. We make custom types of equipment and tend to start a new document from a previous version. We'd like to delete the previous "File Info" data and update with current data for the new document. We delete the "File Info" data and save the document, but when reopened, the data is still there. Thanks you in advance,WRB
Can anyone help me out with this one please? I'm exporting data from a database to a .txt file using MML. It works fine, except for the Arabic, Chinese and Russian language text, which isn't supported in a .txt file. If I save the file as Unicode, then the Arabic, Chinese and Russian language text is maintained, but then when I try to import that to FrameMaker, it doesn't see the Unicode file as MML, and so won't import it.Has anyone else come across a similar problem, and maybe found a clever way around it please?
I am not even sure if the client knows what " Publish to the web" means. He just wants to make sure he can in the future. Everything I read says you can just save to XML from FM 2015 and I seem to recall that it will do it from unstructured FM, but I haven't found where is says explicitly that it will do it from unstructured FM so that I can show him. If this is true, then it will allow us to create his paper manuals in unstructured FM and then save them out to XML in the future to give to a web designer. Also, if you can use unstructured FM to save to XML, is there a primer or guide to things to do or avoid to make the XML output smooth? Thanks in advanceChris
Hi,I was asked if I can help Structured FrameMaker XML training, but perused the Adobe site and came up short.I believe the ask is for template creation, EDD, rules, and round tripping XML using FM 15. That's more than I can comfortably do, but feels like a 4-day course from someone who has the process down.USA/Canada is the location and in-class preferred over Web.Thoughts? Links?Cheers,Sean
Hi All,I have two questions related to Graphics inside the Anchored Frame:1. I have one graphic inside the Anchored Frame which is Imported by Reference How can I convert this graphic so it can be copied into the document (thus no longer referenced object)2. If I have a graphic inside the Anchored Frame Is there a way, I can select this graphic and then swap it with another graphic so the new graphic object has the same demensions?Thank You.
Hi everyone, I am currently working on a marketing flyer for my company. I am new to FM, I have only been using it for about 2 weeks. I am looking for a way to set a custom fill pattern that I can apply to the background of my document. Is there a way to do this similar to how you can add custom fill colors ? or any other way that I may be missing ? I'm looking to add a textured background instead of just a plain color. Thanks !
I am running FrameMaker 12 and have some trouble generating a chinese TOC. The font is SimHei and it is simplified chinese. Most of the TOC seems to work ok, but some headlines come out like this:"openXmlElementId ../../../../../../Manual/FM filer/AQUA/R02 - Chinese/Aqua Blue HW - Chinese R02.fm:<$UniqueXmlElementId<$RelativeXmlElementId"I can't figure out what is amiss. It seems that it should not be a font issue - but then what is it?Can anybody please help?best regardsBjørn
Hi, I have just downloaded the Framemaker trial 2015 release, I need to package a document for my translators. 2015 will not include files i.e. my images if they are not in the root folder. Is this right?Indesign will collect all objects and place them in one folder.
Hello everybody,I have a problem I do not understand.I have a structured document .fm and when I'm saving it after the suppression of a specific element of the structure, FrameMaker crashes.Does anybody have an explanation or a solution for me ?Thanks
Hi there,I have a folder of mifs and I want to run the same scripts over each mif, save each, and close them.Is this possible with extendscript?Regards
Framemaker 2015 v13.0.3.495 (but I think it's happened before)Unstructured(this happened with two of the documents in my book)Document has numerous tables (> 30).Lots of conditional text (simple conditions). When I generate my list of tables, the tables are listed as (table numbers are chapnum-tablenum):3-1 to 3-163-183-173-19 to 3-203-223-213-23 to 3-243-263-25etc.As you can see 18/17 are reversed, ditto for 22/21 and 26/25.In the document, they appear correctly (e.g. table 17 comes before table 18).The only weirdness I can see offhand (and this is the case for most tables in multiple documents) is that the first marker in the table title is a cross-ref, where the marker text includes the table #, but the table # is incorrect (e.g. the cross-ref marker at the beginning of the table header for table 17 indicates "65379: TableTitle: Table 3\+18:\sn Blahblahblah" where 'Blahblahblah' is the actual title. Not all of the tables have this (some have correct numbers, some don't have crossr
I'm creating hyperlinks in FM then converting to PDF. The links go to other PDF files. When I click on a link, it goes to the 2nd PDF but it closes the first document. How can I link to a PDF and get the 2nd file to open without closing the first file?
System: FM 2015 on Windows 10User: Very experienced FrameMaker and Acrobat user. Never experienced this issue before (in almost 20 years of use of FrameMaker). No change in methods or techniques used that would explain the issue. Contacted Adobe Acrobat, and was told Acrobat Pro DC does not support FrameMaker 2015, and was directed to contact Adobe FrameMaker. Use case: Using unstructured FrameMaker to develop content. Using standard FrameMaker cross reference functionality (inserting cross references) to create links to other sections within same document.
Framemaker 2015UnstructuredOkay... I'm looking through posts (and other online sources) to figure out what I need to do, but am hoping that getting info straight from the horse's mouth might work best (that is, save me from doing lots of things incorrectly).I have several Framemaker books, each containing multiple documents. Some of these docs books use conditional text to generate from 2-4 variants. We've been pretty faithful at using our defined paragraph and character styles throughout. We've always generated to .pdf, but for these docs, we want to get them onto our .io site to be consumed online rather than as pdf.So... what is the recommended process for doing this, for short-term gain (for current batch of documents), and long-term (for new documents yet to be created)? Can I accomplish this with unstructured Frame, or do I have to convert into structured (which I haven't used)?(Note: I didn't want to jump down a process and get to a point where I have to shout 'HELP! I'M DROWNING!'
Dear all,In my script I have set up this notification:Notification (Constants.FA_Note_PostActiveDocChange, true); I have now noticed that this is also triggered (executing the Note function) in the following situation:Script is active in a dialgogue, which stays open (is palette). It remembers the 'current' location in the user document to be able to restore it after changes in the document by the script.I switch to the document and do some text editing. Normally I do not need a screen refresh and can then proceed to the palette of the script. If I do a screen refresh (CTRL +l) the notification triggers and the script restores the last 'current location'. In most cases this is the start of the document. My questions are:Is a sceen referesh really a 'change in the document' and thus the behaviour correct?Or is this my mis-interpetation of FA_Note_PostActiveDocChange ?Or am I the victim of an unsharp defintion of FA_Note_PostActiveDocChange ?Thanks for any thoughts about this.Klaus
I have just submitted bug # 4171402 having to do with tables that have n columns in Microsoft Word but 2n - 1 columns when I open the Word document in FM 2015. In other words, FM adds one fewer columns than the number of columns in the original table. The extra columns are blank and appear at the right side of the table. The problem occurs with tables in which the first row straddles (spans) all columns. (In the original document, the first row contains the table title, but I can duplicate the problem with tables that contain no text). It seems that if the Word table has n columns, FM makes sure that the first row contains n cells, even if the first cell straddles n columns. If I open the Word document in Word, save it as RTF, and open the RTF in FM, the number of columns is correct. Saving as RTF is an extra step in a process that I would prefer the users in this project not have to take.I have not tested these documents with earlier versions of FM. --Lynne
Wondering if Framemaker has a global search and replace function for undoing initial caps in sentences. I vaguely remember Word being able to do this, but it's been some time since I've used Word. I've inherited a document where the author used init caps on nearly everything.
When I perform the following functions, the files open as separate files instead of opening in the application itself.1) Open FrameMaker Book. 2) Select all the files listed in the book3) Right click and select OpenThe files open but instead of appearing neatly in the Document Tab (), they open as individual files. When I hover over the application in my desktop taskbar, there are several documents open. Why is this happening? How can I fix this? Thank you!
