Why does a large medical textbook that was downloaded move too slowly and time out?

I am not able to access a textbook downloaded from Elsevier.  The download was difficult but this morning it finally went through.  Now the book is there but movement is slow sluggish that I can't search or navigate through the chapters and the highlight and copy functions will not work.
