Question

Cursor

Hi.  When I draw a box with the Text Tool and start to type the cursor is above the letters and the box disappears.  How do I get back to where the cursor is inline at the end of the text and I can size the text box?  Thanks Carl

I would just reset your indesign pref. Press a sequence of key when you launch Indesign.
In Windows, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift immediately after you click on the InDesign

A dialog will pop up asking if you want to delete the pref file, click yes.

Note that if you have custom keyboard shortcuts, save it first with a different name, you can reload it after you reset the pref.

In Mac, the keys are Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+Shift, press it right after you launch Indesign.

Is it possible there are inadvertent text parameters in effect prior to your drawing out the new text frame? For instance, if there were a negative value in the Baseline Shift field, it could produce that cursor-above-the-text problem.

Hi Carl,

if the cursor is above the letters you may have applied a negative value with baseline shift for characters.

Maybe through an activated character style or as the default value for typesetting.

With no text or text frames selected go to the Character panel and set the value for baseline shift to 0.

Or make sure that you have enabled the character style [None] in the Character Styles panel before you draw out a new text frame and you start to type.

Maybe you work on an area where already another text frame is underneath, so you are not creating a new text frame but working in the already existing one?

It would help us to know some things to help you: Please tell us what operating system (exactly) you're running. Please tell us (exactly) what InDesign version you're using. Is this happening in only file or in multiple different files?
