InDesign files corrupted and unable to save after Windows 11 update KB5074109 (January 2026) - Post #2

Hello, after the last post with at last count about 46k views, this is a major issue with a thread that is now missing? Some have said it has resolved but I haven’t been able to get it resolved because Windows Update KB5078127 isn’t available for me after checking for updates (in AUS running 25H2).

The problem is that for files saved on OneDrive, InDesign crashes upon open or when trying to save.

What another helpful user has said:

  • Discovered a workaround on this, thanks to the help of our support company Air IT Group. On opening the file, make a change in the document (e.g add a cyan square to pasteboard), rather than 'save', click 'save as' and save as over the existing file name > then close the file > reopen the file again and 'save' function should now work without falling over, erroring or crashing out. Each time you open it for the first time, you'll need to do the 'save as' each time over existing file name for it to work. It's a frustrating workaround but at least you'll be able to work on the documents. 

The other helpful fixes were:

  • Copying the .indd file to the local C:\ drive, work on it, put it back.
  • Uninstall Windows Security Update KB5074109, but this wasn’t an option for me and my IT crew were reluctant to do it even if they could.

These seems to work majority of the time and without the Windows Update KB5078127, this will have to do for now.

    Thank you again for your patience while the team investigated this issue. I wanted to share that the fix is now available in the general release version of InDesign 21.4.

    This is the same issue that was being tracked in the following UserVoice report:

    If you were affected by the Times New Roman, Calibri, or related font recognition issues, please update InDesign to version 21.4 through the Creative Cloud Desktop app and test your affected documents again.

    Once updated, please let us know your observations. If you still encounter the issue after updating to 21.4, feel free to share the details here, including your InDesign version, OS version, and any screenshots of the missing font behavior, and we'll be happy to investigate further.

    We had two laptops that were affected by this issue. As suggested, we installed the Microsoft hotfix KB5078127 on one of the affected machines.

    I’m sorry to report that after two reboots (as was suggested by somebody) the issue has not been resolved. Please hurry up and fix this Adobe, I have had to pause Windows Updates on the affected machines and rolled back uninstalling KB5074109 to get InDesign working again. This is not a long-term viable solution as the affected machines are not being updated with Windows security fixes whilst Windows Update is paused. They pose a risk to the organisation’s devices and its data.

    Hi ​@jamessl,

     

    I’m sorry that this is still blocking you, I completely understand how serious this is, especially with security updates being paused. To help us confirm what’s happening on your system, could you please check that the Microsoft update installed correctly and share a screenshot after running the command Get-HotFix in PowerShell. This will help verify whether the KB is fully applied on the machine.

    Microsoft has confirmed this as a Windows issue on their side rather than an InDesign-specific problem, and the fix is tied to the out-of-band update they released. Ref: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24h2#2738msgdesc.

    Once you’ve installed the update, please share the screenshot so we can double-check the installation and take this forward.

    I cant see the update either yet but another workaround from the missing thread that worked for me was to open the indd.file, save it as a idml., throw the so called corrupded indd.file away and then save the idml as a indd.file again. I only had problem with saving, not open files so this worked for me.

    If I understand correctly, the KB5078127 update should resolve the issue?

    Hi Spit_Mkl, from my understanding KB5078127 (Windows 11) or KB5078129 (Windows 10) will resolve this issue

    Hi everyone,

     

    Thanks for sharing the updates and workarounds here, and I understand how disruptive this has been. Based on the latest information, this issue has been addressed by Microsoft through a recent Windows update. If you’re on Windows 11, please make sure KB5078127 is installed, or KB5078129 if you’re on Windows 10. If the update isn’t showing up via Windows Update in your region yet, it should also be available through the Microsoft Update Catalog. Once installed, please restart your system and then test saving and opening your InDesign files again, including those stored on OneDrive. Sharing the helpx article with the latest update for reference.

    If you’ve already installed the update and are still seeing crashes or save errors, please let us know along with your Windows version and InDesign version so we can look into it further. Also, the previous thread on this issue should become active again soon on the new community platform.

    Hello Abhishek, thank you for your official reply. For me to install anything outside of the official Windows or Adobe updates, I need clearance from my company to contact the external IT team. I will begin the process but have you been provided an insight by Microsoft as to when this might be available through the normal means to your struggling Australian customers that have been dealing with this for over a week?

    Thank you so much for reposting this! I just tried the workaround and it seems to work so far. I hope there will be a permanent fix.

    I was also looking for the previous thread I saw yesterday and the direct link just redirects to the main page.     Hope there is a permanent fix too. I’m glad people are finding this article for solutions. I noticed it was still 0 views when people were commenting, figured it may have been a glitch on my side. It’s all weird.

    I was also wondering what the status was with this issue, so came here this morning to check on a comment I had made in that previous thread - logged in and my previous comment had disappeared along with the whole thread? What’s going on there?
