Hi all,

I am a hobby photographer (own a Nikon D750) and I am interested in purchasing a 27 inch 5k iMac for Lightroom and Photoshop. What configuration should I be looking at to ensure reasonable performance (i.e not freezing regularly)? I have seen the system requirements on the Adobe site but given I will be spending at least 3k, I don't want a computer that can just manage it but I don't want overkill either. Regardless of build, I will be having 16GB RAM but I'm not too sure about i5 vs i7 and the AMD R9 M380 vs M390 vs M395 performance when it comes to Lightroom and Photoshop. I generally update every 3 years or so, so I want a machine that will comfortably see me through without overspending I as I'm sure there will be something even better by 2018-2019. I currently own a late 2011 base configuration 13 inch Macbook Pro and other than the gorgeous 5k screen, it is only the Photoshop and Lightroom performance that is really convincing me to upgrade as it is still a great everyday task computer.

Cheers,

Emma

You need a powerful GPU, at or near the top of the line. Not a middle of the road GPU.

Thanks for your inputs guys . In regards to GPU, I was looking at the AMD Radeon R9 M390 2B VRAM which the middle model has. Is this more than enough for a few years or am I better off looking at the M395 2GB/M395X 4GB?

    Your instincts could be correct.

There is a similar thread at Apple, with test link, which might be of interest if you are into heavy gaming.

    Hi Emma,

    Greetings!!!

I read the requirements that you have written.

i7 is much better than i5 , i7 5th generation is what is new and fast in the market.

16 GB RAM is more than enough (new is DDR4).

I would prefer Nvidia Geforce 970 or 980 over AMD graphic card.

Rest is all depends upon the budget.

    I hope that help.

    Regards

    Jitendra
