I am tryimg to add people to a group photo that were missed using layers.  When I crop the picture of the people I am trying to add on one layer it makes those same changes to the main photo on the another layer.  Is there another method to accomplish this without using layers, if not any suggestions?

  1. Open the group picture (A).  Go to Image>Resize>canvas size and extend the canvas so that you will have room to place an addition.  For example, make the width 115% and click the left anchor point. You will have to experiment to make this come out right.
  2. Open the picture with the person you wish to add (B). Activate the lasso tool or selection brush, and select the person in B. Go to Edit>copy to place the selection on the clipboard.
  3. Go back to A, and go to Edit>paste. Activate the move tool and position the person.
  4. Activate the clone stamp tool and clone the background on to the canvas extension from step #1. If this is unsatisfacory, you can merge the layers down, select the entire group, and copy/paste to a new, appropriate background.
  5. Mastering the use of layers is critical.

Make sure only the layer to be cropped is selected.

Make a rectangular selection of the area to be cropped.

Select > Inverse

Delete.
