RED footage thumbnails previews are scrambled in Media Browser, Project Window and Timeline.

What is the deal with RED footage thumbnail previews becoming scrambled?

Makes identifying clips very difficult. It even translates over the Progam and Souce monitors at 1/16th resolution options.

My guess is that the thumbnails take on that same compression rate and causes the scramble.

Are there any settings I can tweak to fix this behavior?

Very interesting could this be a new RED format that is unsupported in Premiere Pro?  I tried opening it in MediaInfo but get no real information in Tree view

    FOLLOWUP

This is the info from Premiere Pro 2017.  Absolutely the craziest frame size and this is 8K

    File Path: E:\RED\A005_C010_0408G7_001.R3D

    Type: RED R3D Raw File

    File Size: 406.20 MB

    Image Size: 3888 x 3240

    Frame Rate: 23.976

    Total Duration: 00:00:06:11

    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 2.0

    Red R3D Details:

    Camera Firmware Version: 6.3.78

    Camera Sensor: HELIUM 8K S35

    Minimum Color Version: 2

    Resolution: 3888x3240

    FrameRate Num: 24000

    FrameRate Den: 1001

    Reel ID: A005_C010_0408G7

    Exposure Time: 2.085e+04

    GenLock Setting: 0\

Here is what a good clip with that same Helium 8K S35 sensor looks like:

    File Path: E:\Red 8K\H004_C006_1211TB_001.R3D

    Type: RED R3D Raw File

    File Size: 1.38 GB

    Image Size: 8192 x 4320

    Frame Rate: 23.976

    Total Duration: 00:00:06:09

    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0

    Red R3D Details:

    Camera Firmware Version: 6.3.33

    Camera Sensor: HELIUM 8K S35

    Minimum Color Version: 2

    Resolution: 8192x4320

How could that frame size get so mangled?

Probably not a "new format" issue. People have had this problem for a long time:
Distorted and skewed anamorphic footage in premiere

Just spent an hour on the phone with customer support and they couldn't figure it out. Definitely seems to be a bug very specific to playback within premiere. They need to get their developers to figure this out. The behavior is very strange.

    - Thumbnails and playback at 1/4 resolution playback the footage skewed and distorted.

    - Playback at full resolution or 1/2 resolution is perfectly fine.

    - Issue still exists if you create proxy file

    - If you render the file in premiere and then play it back at any resolution it is skewed and distorted.

    - If you export the file it will playback perfectly fine outside of premiere as an mov or mp4. (weird considering it still carries over to proxy files)

    - the issue does not happen in any other non linear editing software that I've tested ex. fxp or red cine x

My files were mostly 5k resolution out of a Red Weapon Monstro 8K VV sensor using Cooke anamorphic lenses

Thanks for the advice! I will go proxy on my next project to see if it helps the workflow!

    Cheers

If you can File Share a shorter clip, I can take a look here, see what happens.

Here is the footage I am working with. Pretty crappy clip but it was the smallest one I could find. Set the quality to 1/16th to see if it scrambles on the program and source monitors.

Updated drivers and turned off GPU rendering with no change. Just really long export times.

I've setup a test project in CC2017.1.2 (latest release) ... and it's fascinating.

The RED controls in the Master tab work quite spiffily, off course. I certainly wouldn't object to working more media from that camera ... ahem ...

And for a while, I wasn't getting the glitzed thumbnails at all. Then I realized the thumb for the clip was skew-geed like you showed, then the sequence went skew-gee. But as soon as I click on either, they straighten back out. Then a bit later, go all skew-gee again.

Weird. Your behavior is definitely what I'm seeing in Win10 (Creator) with an Nvidia 970 with recently updated driver. I can click to clear, for a bit ... although the full media never goes wonky in my machine, either Source monitor or program.

I have premier set to use GPU acceleration CUDA.

Have you checked manually to see if that is the most recent driver for that 780TI card?

If it isn't, do a manual updated of the video driver. If it is, try rolling back a driver.

Also, for a test, set Mercury Acceleration to Software Only and see what you get.

What is your hardware ... OS/CPU/RAM/GPU/vRAM, and your video settings for Mercury acceleration?
