Render preview vs Proxy

Hi,

Fairly new to Premiere, but I want to know what to choose for editing with no lag, rendering a preview file or creating proxies? Is there a difference, or are they good in their own way? (I've tried both as they seem to work pretty well)

Rendering with originals is fine, but change anything,  you need to render again.

The built in proxy process doesn't have that problem, but doesn't work perfectly with some merged or time-remapped clips.

I do proxies all the time.
