After Effects 2022 (22.2.1) All Caps Issue

Explorer ,
Apr 07, 2022 Apr 07, 2022

After updating to 22.2.1 build 3 I've got strange problem with "All Caps" feature in Character control.
Some letters are "caps" and some are not, some letters can be made bold after that and some not. No issues like that were present in previous version.

See attached file. If font is anything else that "Regular" "All caps" is tottaly crazy.

Thanks for sharing the steps. I can reproduce this on my end as well. I've filed a bug for investigation.

Moving this thread from Discussions to Bugs.

it's a strange issue, some update versions are prone to act this way, some are never experiencing it...

I don't think it has anything to do with the versions. The text rendering system in AE is buggy as hell, and hasn't been updated in years. I am pretty sure this particular bug, which is one of many, is persistent. But since it only occures erradically, and because the AllCaps feature is not necessarily something a lot of people use often, it only rears it's head with some irregularity.

Did you investigate that? I use it a lot, and never have problems with it.

The problem still persists in 2025.5.0

I cannot tell you how many renders this stupid issue has ruined for us. We do a lot of repetetive/automated work and the various work-arounds are not viable options. I really need this feature to work, and I honestly don't think it is a big ask.

Would someone from Adobe please acknowledge this?

Hi Jonas,

Could you share more details? Is it happening with a specific font? Are you on macOS or Windows? Please share a project file that I can test on my end.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
Nishu

Trying to find the video I made. I thought it was in this thread. There is no one font it doest it with. It definately has to do with force caps, then once it bugs out, anything you type is in that. I have foudn out that if I go to PS and type out force cap, that copy and paste, that seems to help?? either way, very weird and frustrating and yes, sometimes you dont see it until you render.

The problem is not consistent or predictable, and does not seem to pertain to any specific fonts or version of AE. We have done some digging though, and there might be a connection with using an expression on the Source Text property.

Steps to replicate:

  1. Open AE and create a comp with a text layer, containing any string.
  2. Add an expression to the Source Text property, that changes the text (i.e. 'text.sourceText+"test"')
  3. Enable All Caps for the layer
  4. Cycle through available fonts, until reaching one, where the problem is seen.
  5. Restart AE and the problem disappears, for the particular font. But cycle through available fonts again, and it will appear in another.

My issues have nothing to do with expressions though. Just simple text layer. Very frustrating, especially when its not consitent AND it happens with either downloaded fonts or adobe fonts.

Funny. We tested it a few times this morning, and could replicate it every time (as described above), but only with the expression step.
Anyway this is definitely a funky one.
