After Effects consuming to much Ram

I'm using AE latest beta, alongside with the latest official realease. In both I'm getting warning signs that says my machine is out of ram, when it actually has plenty (in sometimes it seems AE doens't free that RAM).

I'm running AE 23.1.0.27 for the beta version and AE 22.6. It seems this bug is present in the latest release, because I never had this kind of issue before (actually I'm not able to make ram preview without getter the warning sign).

My machine is a Macbook pro 16 M1 MAX with 32gb of ram, running Monterey 12.6.

I'm attaching a screenshot where you can see, that even AE only consuming 7gb of ram, is still printing the RAM message.

I need help please

Hi @alant64956177,

This issue has been fixed in After Effects 2023 (version 23.0). If you do continue to experience this issue with overuse of RAM, please update any third-party plug-ins you may have installed. We're aware of several popular plug-ins that have released recent updates due to plug-ins that were leaking memory.

Thanks for reporting this issue,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

This is an issue in 22.6, but it should be fixed in 23.1x27 beta unless you're using third-party effects that are leaking memory. Are you able to share your project for us to look at?

Please also make sure you don't have the Reduce Cache Size when memory is low setting enabled. We are in the process of removing that as it is also causing some of these memory issues.

Hi Jenkmeister, thansk for the help.

I will check it. Is hard to send the project because has many files linked. About the third-party effects used in the project, I'm using Trapcode looks and posterize time, but when I started to see this issues I removed them (having the same result).

Thanks. If you can't send us the full project, can you use Collect Files -> Report Only and post the report? That should tell us which effects are in use. There are known issues with Red Giant Shadow and Primatte Keyer right now, likely more, and we are working with the developers to get the memory leaks fixed.

Hi Jenkmeister, here's the report file. This instance of the project is more advanced and has a lot more of plugins involved. but in AE 22.5 I have any issue to work with it.

One thing you mention and I forgot is that I used Redgiant shadow at the beggining of the project.

thanks again!

Thanks. We've also learned this morning that Magic Bullet Looks may also be causing issues with memory in 22.6/23.* builds.

You may find going back to 22.4 will work better for you if you need those plugins. In 22.4, AE is not tracking the use of plugin memory, so it thinks more memory is available on the system than it actually is. It is a cause of some AE and general system instability which is why we've changed the memory tracking to include plugin memory, but plugin developers are still getting fixes out to account for this change.

Ok, I hope developers can fix their plugins soon. Will try to look for substitutes for those plugins

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for reporting this issue, @alant64956177. As Sean mentioned below, this issue should be fixed in the latest Beta builds (23.10.27 or later) with the exception of some third-party effects that are currently leaking memory. Please give After Effects (Beta) a try and let us know if you continue to experience this issue. If you do experience it in the Beta builds, please let us know what effects are being used in your project.

We will update this thread when the fix becomes available in a release build of After Effects.

Thanks again,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Hi John, I'm running AE 2023 since it was released, it seems to work better. I still see the ram message from time to time.

There's a way to know which plugins are causing leaking memory?

thanks

We know the Red Giant VFX Suite along with the Magic Bullet Suite has some memory issues, though the fixes for that were rolled out on Monday morning, so upgrade those if you're using them. If you find yourself running into this again, you can do a File -> Dependencies -> Collect Files... -> Generate Report only and that'll list all your effects. Post that list back here and we'll be happy to take a look and see if we can reproduce the issues and report them.
