After Effects Flashing black frames

AE 25.3.0 Build 71

iMAC 3.8ghz 8 Core i7

GFX AMD RADEON Pro 5700 XT 16GB

OS SEQUOIA 15.5

Hi all I am getting random 1 frame black flashed apperaing on previews and renders. Clearing out Cache and switching to draft/full quality doesnt cure it.

If I reload the footage the black frame clears, but randomly appears somewhere else.

Doesnt seem to be happening in the 25.4.0 BUILD 50 BETA

Thank you for your feedback on the Beta build. We have made the fix available to the non-beta build now. If you update to AE 25.3.1x3 in CCD, that contains this fix. Our apologies again for the issue.

Note: Once you have the build updated, make sure to empty your disk cache to ensure any badly cached frames are cleared out.

Same issue: black frames, single frames inserted from other media in project (sometimes inverted) - worryingly - also renders out with these errors - dumping cache does not always work - have to reboot AE.

I've updated to After Effects 25.3 and video files (both .movs and .mp4s) are randomly showing black frames when previously they didn't. This can happen in both a RAM preview, when scrolling through the timeline (and in pre-comps timelines) and when rendering. Flushing the cache can bring these frames back, but then black frames will show elsewhere in the comps.

Running AE on Windows 10 Pro version 2009, Nvidia Studio Driver 572.16 (required for V-Ray GPU installation).

Fix needed asap, Adobe!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the issue. For testing, can you try this: Go to After Effects Preferences > Display > disable Hardware Accelerated Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels.

Let me know if that brings any change.

Thanks,
Nishu

The only "solution" I am finding at present is to roll back to AE 25.2.2 (Build 2). Given some of the other issues being brought up on the forum regarding 25.3 I'd say it needs some more time in the oven.

I believe this post corresponds with the earlier post on this subject...
https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-bugs/after-effects-flashing-black-frames/idc-p/15379201...

These should be merged so we can keep their investigation of this work stopping issue on their front burner.

I had to return to the previous version, since in this new version I am encountering problems in After Effects, in the preview and in some files that are corrupted, I hope you can give me some solution.

Can you make sure your GPU driver is up to date?

Same issue here. In case it helps the investigation, I found the issue mainly happening with a rotoscoped layer and/or with Mocha. The black frames did not appear when I lowered the resolution for Full to Half. I'm on a Mac Studio Pro.

Have you tried purging the Memory and disk Cache?

Edit - > Purge -> All emeory and disk cache

I think we're finding it is happening in many types of actions, for me it was happening in simple RAM preview, playback, and green screen renders. Again, this seems to be a problem with 25.3 in general, not tied to any specific action or effect.

Noticing it on Greenscreen projects. I have a simple GS composition, using keylight set to screen matte on a 1 layer and then luma keying a duplicate layer to get my key. Weird flashes, black frames, layer flips upside down, flashes an upside down frame from a different comp. Also finding color management all over the place, different results depending on version footage flashing different 'looks', and a reload of footage completly loses the colorM and the key goes off. Open in the beta and the ColorM is back, but not the same as it was. Rolled back to pre 25.3 to get me through this stage.

Hi, so sometimes when I'm editing in After Effects the screen decides to go black for certain frames in the comp, when I purge everything it goes away sometimes but recently it's been happening more often and it's getting annoying...

Hello. Since the 25.3.0 update on macOS 15.5 with Apple M3 Max, using QuickTime Apple ProRes 422 HQ Trillions of Colors 4K files, I experience the return of a quite classic bug : blank images (full black) very often, here and there. Purging cache helps a litle bit but quitting and restarting is more efficient. It's not a huge bug but it's still annoying a lot. I hope there's a fix soon 8^)

I tried all steps you recommend. - purge all, disable effects, disable HW acceleration, restart..  None of them fix the issue.
Flickering is still there. It affects different types of footage. in one project it is retimed (stretched to 120%) mp4, other is mov/proress422 at 100%...

For some reason every since about a week ago every time I try to edit on after effects my project glitches and sometimes crashes. I have after effects 25 and this started happening randomly. I use a macbook pro 2023 36 gb of ram. I'm not a big laptop nerd or anything so I'm not sure what to do. But I factory reset my macbook just because of this and it did nothing. Or if I add an effect it makes it worse. Please can someone help me.

I've been experiencing the same issue since updating to version 25.3. The issue occurs when I use Roto Brush, when previewing and rendering, a glitch lappears. I have tried restarting my PC, but the glitch still appears. Is this a bug? What should I do?

Hello, I've been having exactly the same problem since the latest update to AE 25.3.0 Build 71.

  • MacBook pro Apple M3 Max 96 Go
  • macOS Sequoia 15.5 (24F74)

I thought it depended on the footage, but it doesn't. QuickTime, Photoshop or Illustrator, and JPEG files are affected.

Clearing the cache and restarting AE temporarily resolves the problem. The AE project isn't affected by the bug.

I think it's a caching issue. This isn't the first time this has happened after an update, and it's usually quickly resolved with a new one. However, this time, the problem is particularly annoying, in my case I have to clear cache and restart very often.

Stay strong, we look forward to your solution!

8^)
