A fix for the Faux fonts has been added to the AE Beta 24.5x40. If you're able to download it (CCD -> Betas) and give it a go to confirm this is fixed for you, that'd be greatly appreciated and then we'll be able to get the fix into the 24.5 non-beta release.

I'm also having the same issue. I thought at first maybe AE was struggling with the massive comp size I was working in, so I moved my text animation into a smaller precomp, 640x936. The moment I enable motion blur in the comp for my text layers, I can no longer preview anything live. Just simple moving text is enough to bring my computer to its knees. I'm using a M3 Max Macbook Pro with 128GB of ram. Running macOS 14.4.1

I included a screen recording of the behavior and the project file as well.

Thanks for sharing the screen recording and the project file. I could see the problem on my end my too. I noticed you had Faux Bold enabled. Turning it off made the preview work as it should. Can you try that and let us know the outcome? We're now invesitgating this behaviour.

Thanks,

Nishu

Does this happen without the external monitor being plugged in? If so, Disable "Displays have separate Spaces" in macOS System Settings > Desktop & Dock.

and see if that resolves the issue.

displays have separate Spaces" in macOS System Settings > Desktop & Dock. - was already set this way. (not sure why apple thought having spaces for each monitor is helpful, but thats unrelated)

Also tried with each monitor as its own space, no noticable diffrence.

thought it might just be a bug - from converting psd type to ae. tried making the type not a bounding box, tried new bounding box with diff type/copy.
its all kinda the same,

seem to just be slow with type and like shap layers, when you add too much things grind to a halt.

nishu - this SOLVED my issue for me! THANK YOU! And faux bold was buried in the hamberger menu at the top of the text panel (I had to google where it was hidden!). But holy smokes, it's fast again!

turning video rendering to murcury software only, from gpu rendering,

nothing is really making this better or usablein a normal fashion.

We've tried reproducing what you're describing internally but it is not showing up. Can you make a screen capture of what you're doing and share it with us? Maybe we are missing something in our understanding.

every thing in the ae interface grinds to a halt.

i cant move layers around the frame or in the time line.

the screen capture doesnt make clear how long it take btwn clicking to edit text, being able to enter type and how long it takes to update.
its also not super clean in the capture that ive clicked on the type layer to move it around and the long lag before it starts moving.

also this maching is less than a month old.

Thanks for the video. Does this happen if a different (say Helvetica) font is used in the text box?

Thanks for sharing the details.

I see you've Faux Bold enabled on the text layer in the After Effects project you shared. Can you disable it and see if that makes things any better?

Let us know.

edit-- confirm w a colleague on m1 mac studio ae 24.0.3
- its a bit laggy on this system/ae version. but nothing as bad as what i have been seeing.

i will have to check if 24.0.3 works better with this on my m3.

but looks like it is the fuax bold.
turning it off makes things work as expected.

this type was converted from a client provided psd. i kept looking for layer styles or something weird i dont usuall use - like the faux bold.

it also the TT set ont he type but its not all caps which is weird.

Thanks very much for reporting this, @cmatts. We've got a ticket filed and are looking into what is causing Faux Bold to cause such a big performance degradation.

Thanks again,

when im using Faux bold - The software starts responding very very slowly

Almost unworkable at all

Steps to reproduce -  just use the Faux bold

Expected result - As it has always been - that the use does not create any problem
