Rather new to AE. I found a video teaching me how to get from a 2D vector logo in illustrator to a 3D rotating shape in AE. However, my mask from illustrator was carried over to AE but when I "Created Shapes from vector layer" my mask didn't go with the new layer that was created to make the 3D object. It's just a couple of solid colors I used before I masked my logo in illustrator.
How would I have my mask from Ilustrator be transferred over to the 3D image? or how would I make my logo with a mask into a 3D image in AE?

You can extrude an Illustrator File in AE without converting it into Shape Layers. Converting to Shape Layers is required if you want to animate the different parts of the logo independently. Converting to Shape Layers oftentimes results in awkward results which requires you to dive into the Shape Layer's Content Section to delete extra shapes/fills.
So, if all you want to do is to rotate an AI Logo/File, go ahead and import into AE and get busy!
AND, you should go through the Curated Tutorials found in the Help Menu as well as within the Learn Panel (Window Menu).

By 3D, I assume you mean "extruded"; where the logo has thickness instead of a flat plane. If so, then converting the AI to Shape Layers is the first step. As I mentioned, you'll then have to clean up the Paths that are created by the Create Shapes from Vector layer feature/process. There is also the possibility that not all features in the AI can be converted into Shape Layers - AI and AE are different apps and have features that overlap and these can be re-produced in AE and then there are features in AI that are not reproducible in AE. These involve gradients, 3D features in AI and certain advanced path features (IIRC).
