About to throw my laptop out the window!

Never had any issues running AE before. Suddenly experiencing 10-15 second delay in every action I try to take. What's up with that!?!?!

What are the complete computer specs, including hard drives (how many, what kind, what is on each, what capacity, and how full)?

If NVIDIA graphics, make sure to use the latest Studio Driver from NVIDIA (NOT the Game Driver).

What version and build number of AE?

I have one hard drive (Lenovo ThinkPad; 952GB; 212GB being used)…

And one external drive (LaCie; 1.8TB; 288GB being used). This is where I do/keep all my AE and Premiere Pro files.

I don’t do any gaming.

I keep my AE updated whenever prompted.  Currently using Version 25.1 (Build 68).

Full disclosure, I got some sort of pop-up message from AE as I was shutting down my computer the other day, but I closed it before I realized what it was… so I have no idea what it was trying to tell me…. And I think that has to be related…

Any thoughts appreciated….!

What processor?

Is the external an SSD?  How is it connected?

Sorry...

Can't answer that... I'm old.  External drive is hard-wired to my laptop...

When I click on properties/hardware, it says: LaCie Rugged Mini USB3 SCSI Disk Device.  I says "it's working properly."

Need to step away, so AFK for a while... Thanks!

The external drive appears to be an HDD, not an SSD.

A fast SSD is necessary for good performance.

I've been using this set-up for more than two years with no speed/performance issues at all.

I can't imagine that all of a sudden that's a problem.  But I appreciate your time and thoughts!

Revert to a version prior to 2025. There have been known performance issues with the new UI... that, and AE has been demanding more resources with almost each version since they went subscription- and by that I mean to say very few thinkpads meet minimum spec. If you need to find your device's individual components, hit ctrl-alt-delete, and click task manager. The performance tab will have all the parts' names (and stats/current usage details. I often use it to see if my RAM is maxed out).

And assuming you have one of the beefier thinkpads ($1800+ usually);

External hard drives have alwaus provided problematic performance, but it is more apparent in newer versions, and especially spinnydisks(as opposed to the newer SSd's which are just thumb drives on crack). Here are my suggestions, take as many as you care to try.

Rollback to a previous version (preferably as far as possible). An adobe support worker can help here. This is probably the solution. You're not the only one having trouble with this version

Turn off hardware acceleration and multi frame render. This will increase overhead and stop AE from trying to use parts of your machine that, as a laptop, probably are best ignored.)

In task manager, check the RAM when you are getting poor performance. You may not have enough- AE slurps it up in ways that absolutely are not adviseable for performant software (looking at you, devs). If you're maxing it out, you may need to upgrade it or edit in a lower resolution (note you may need yo clear ram to make it clear the high resolution frames. No, it's not automatic.)

Clear your disk cache, wherever it is, take note of where it is, because you want it on your computer's fastest drive  (which will be a built in SSD hopefully)

Upgrade your built in storage to a larger m.2 NVMe solid state drive (don't worry, it's just a single chip that slots into the motherboard, best buy a tech friend will install it for you in like 5 minutes. If yours does not have a spare slot, transferring your operating system can take an hour or so). Built in storage really

Move things to your internal drive when you work on them.

Try with a USB-C SSD external drive. This will be much faster to work with.

Wow... There's a lot there.   Thanks so much...

I'll start with reverting to an earlier version...

I do clear my cache regularly... but not RAM... I'll check that out, too...

Thanks again for taking the time. I really do appreciate it!!!

Adobe may not be my favorite, but their competitors still have a year or two before they begin overtaking it, so for now we're in the same boat- of course I'll help!
