Adding clothing material

New Here ,
Dec 29, 2017 Dec 29, 2017

Hi, I would like to add extra clothing material to a moving person in a video, what is the best way of accomplishing this?

I tried using the clone tool to move clothing from where the clothes are to where the skin is. This works well for one frame, but I run into issues when doing this to multiple frames.

If I add too many frames of cloning to one layer, After Effects slows down a ton, so I have a layer per frame.

If I color one layer at a time, I get a glitchy effect as the paint isn't exactly the same. I could not figure out how to clone from one layer to another.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Sometimes you can speed up the process a bit by using Stabilize Motion and offsetting time. There are tens of thousands of combinations of workflow so without seeing the actual shot it is impossible to give you any meaningful suggestions.

The BEST way?  Re-shoot the video with a properly-clothed person, that's how!

What you want to do is really, Really, REALLY tough and time-consuming even for a 20-year veteran, who's probably going to say, "You need to re-shoot" anyways.  I get the notion you might not be a 20-year veteran.

If I were you, I'd write this off as a lost cause.

Thanks for the response Dave. Unfortunately re-shooting is out of my ability.

To clarify, the piece that I am editing is rather small, so minor differences are okay. What I am looking for is a way to clone paint from one frame to another, from a different layer. Do you know how to do that?

It's not going to work. Cloth movement is complex due to the tension of the perpendicular fibers. Just cloning something is going to look totally awful and fake. You have to reshoot or use complex 3D animation to create a virtual garment. No way around it. and now that you've heard it from two people you better believe it.

Thanks for the responses.

I would prefer suggestions rather than reasons it's not going to work. I am lucky in that the clothing material feeds well to what I am doing. Painting frame by frame has been working but is time-consuming. Using the clone tool from one frame to another also works well, but After Effects slows down if it is all done in one layer.

Does anyone know if it is possible to clone from a different layer? And if so, can you please explain the steps?

It all depends on the shot. Show all the shot you want to manipulate and what exactly you want
