Adding Premiere Pro Sequences to Timeline After Effects

New Here ,
Jun 10, 2020 Jun 10, 2020

Hi,

My workflow usually involves importing premiere pro sequences into an afx project. Instead of the other way around. This has been working without issue up until yesterday. I've tried several times to import a PP sequence into Afx. This part works just fine. The problem I run into is when I try to drag that sequence into the afx timeline. It displays the little circle wih the line through it stating I cant do that. I've restarted both programs, I've tried it with different projects, I've restarted my computer several times. All to no avail.

How long are the sequences? How are you adding them to the Project? Are you trying to edit in After Effects? AE is the worst NLE ever designed because it was never intended to be used to edit sequences. I'm really curious about your workflow.

As far as the problems go, what happens when you open the comp created when you import a sequence? Dragging sequences into a timeline suggests that you are combining edited sequences into a new and longer sequence in AE. If opening the comp created when you import a sequence does not work then what changed on your system? New virus definitions, updates to OS or driver, new programs installed, or even new extensions installed. Any change to the system could throw a monkey wrench into the works.

Hi Rick,

Thank you for responding. The sequences aren't that long. This particular one I'm working on is less than 10 seconds. I understand AFX is not an editing app. I'll try to explain as best I can. Right now I'm making short promos (15 seconds<) for brands. Once I have the short footage I want to use in edited in PP, I import that sequence via Dylink in AFX. Most of my workflow is adding effects and animating other elements around that footage (similar to vox explainer videos on youtube/netflix). So I spend way more time in AFX than PP. When I'm making things that are longer than 15 seconds replacing every clip from PP to AFX comp gets tedious. This is why I usually just import the entire sequence.

Since this issue started when I open up the comp created from the import it's empty. I did just update some software on my mac so that might be the issue. I only saw one other person post about this problem and someone said it might be a firewall. However, I dont want to mess with that stuff. I'll just replace with afx comp for the time being.

You might try just selecting every clip in the sequence and creating a comp from the selection using Dynamic Link. If that works you will still get your comp, you have just avoided importing a sequence as a comp. You could then return to Premiere Pro and undo the last action to return the sequence to the previous state. I use that create/undo workflow all the time with Premiere Pro because most of my FX shots are very complicated and not suited at all to keep as a Dynamic Link.

I usually edit in Premiere Pro and then use After Effects' Import Premiere Pro Project command to bring it into AE without messing with Dynamic Link at all.

That seems to be broken for the OP. That's why I suggested trying Dynamic Link.

I just tried 3 sequences from PPro projects and they all imported without errors. There is some kind of hardware, software, version error that is causing the OP's problems.
