AE 2018 vr workflow 3d edit problem

Hi,

I'm experimenting with vr workflows and tools in ae 2018.

So far everything works well like expected, except the option Add 3D Edit. When I use it on a equirectangular clip, the new VR Output comp displays a wrong image.

All of the 6 cameras that are combined into the final view look exactly the same - they just show exactly the same view as the master camera in the VR Edit1 comp. So in result my output footage is just six copies of the edit view stitched into an equirectangular image

The Extract Cubemap option works correctly, it creates all the precomps, the cube scene with 6 camera views, and a final output comp that at default shows the exact same image as my source clip.

So why doesn't the 3D edit work the same?

Hello!  I can see what you are describing as the "looking through fly eyes" output in the initial view of the VR Output comp, though this is the same behavior as in the original Skybox Composer script as well.  To see your Equirect output, click on the Open Output/Render button in the VR Comp Editor (formerly Composer).  Does this produce the output you're expecting?

Can you share the image file you're trying to work with?

Also, can you please tell us more information about your system hardware, OS, etc.?

It's any image at all.

The theory is that no matter what you pick the 2D edit or the 3D edit, the output comp should show you the same image that you started with - that's the whole idea behind this tool.

It works with the 2D edit, but it doesn't with the 3D edit

Just please tell me of you can reproduce it. Basically both options Add 2D edit and Add 3D edit after clicking, should create a lot of comps and precomps, but the final comp, with a sufix of (VR output), should show exactly the same image you started with when you were clicking the button. The Add 2D Edit works that way, but the Add 3D Edit messes up the image. Does it work the same for you, or does it work properly?

You can test it with any horizontal image, doesn't have to be a equirectangular spherical panorama - in that case the output comp will show the original image rescaled, but it still will be the original image. With the 3D edit button, I'm getting a mosaic of the original image, as if a fly was looking at it

Ok, this does work

So the output comp in 3d edit mode isn't ready until we press the "Open Output/Render" button?

Seems like an unnecessary additional step compared to the 2D edit mode 😕 but OK.

Thanks for your help

I ran into the same issue and thought I am going crazy because it seemed that collapsed transformation was'nt working properly. Kevins solution mad me realize that the bottom Layer (3)  in the (VR* Edit 1) comp was turned off after Hitting the open Output/Render button. That is where you place your elements in 3D space. Am even better solution is to just turn that layer into a guide layer. Thatway You still have your visual reference at all times in the Edit comp.

I have a 360 comp that i want to export.

In the comp i have

  • a .c4d file (linked to a the c4d 3d project file)
  • some graphics
  • 360 footage.

Unwrapping in a good export doesnt work with Vr Comp editor.

footage only works fine, but not with 3d files and graphics.

Please help

I am having a similar issue VR Editor and the Create Environment map script. I have a 3ds MAX equirectangular render, the camera and flat reference layers imported into AfterFX. However, the VR Sphere to Plane effects is not functioning as expected. I have found little documentation on the workflow.

I am not a newbie to VR - i was a beta tester for the original mettle scripts/effects. @chrisbobotis
