AE Can't relink/replace stills Internal Verification Failure only assign RGB Profiles

Created a project in AE CC 2019. Moved the project and all files to a new external hard drive, which as expected, created some broken links.

Problem is when I try to Replace the files (pngs and jpgs), I get the following errors:

1) After Effects error: internal verification failure, sorry! {You can only assign RGB profiles.} ( 39 :: 0 )

followed by:

2) After Effects error. file 'yournamehere' cannot be imported – this 'GEPJ' file is damaged or unsupported.

I can manually import any of these files into the project again without issue, but then have to manually replace the individual images in the project window

Deleting preferences did not help. Have down-saved it and same problem exists in CC 2015-2019

All files are RGB color space and, again, both jpgs and pngs are effected.

I must update and correct the issue:

I was off on my CC version testing and was able to get relinking back by using CC 2015.

Totally unacceptable but that is my current workaround. Are there any other real solutions out there?
