hello,
how do I achieve, text layers updating automatically their name when changing text in the comp view ?
it only does on new layers but never on duplicated ones !
is that intended to be or is there a hidden preference or short cut
thanks in advane

Check your AV colums. By default it's set to layer name, not source name and since you can rename anything in AE, a layer name must not necessarily have any relation to its source name. If it still doesn't work, then indeed it might be anotehr weird bug in CC 2017, but what else is new?

Hi Mylenium,
it does't matter if switched to layer name or sourcename
the name of the text layer still doesn't change if changed in comp view
what to do with weird bugs ?

so that's all with any help ?
its not helpful to call it a weird bug for an expansive and industry proven tool lacking in basic functions !
@adobe: please fix that bug

I'm sure the denizens of Adobe will soon swarm in and tell you to report them using the bug report form, but if and when this will then be picked up is another question, so just move on and ignore it for the time being.

sorry but your sarcasm doesn't help either
I have to rename a project with trillions of text layers by hand now
the best is, in photoshop there is no issue with that
maybe the people from Ps should talk sometimes with the people from Ae, how they do that
man, that would help a lot of animators
thanks a lot

I'm not seeing this issue. What OS are you using and what, exact, version number of AE?

I noticed, after renaming round about 400 text layers,
that the so called WEIRD bug depends on the choosen character font.
any ideas ?
because it's still random
and please don't suggest to choose the right font !
thanks a lot

Hey people,
I figured out that this issue only occurs if an AEFX Document from an older version is being opened,
please fix this weird bug till next AE Update
thanx a lot to myself

G'day Nash, just wondering weather you found a solution to this problem as I too are experiencing it.

Solution:
1. Highlight the text layer
2. type [ENTER], [Backspace], [ENTER]
3. It will auto update and keep auto updating.

I don't think this was a bug. any layer in the timeline has 2 ways of being presented:
1. a source name - the actual source name file as it is in the project panel.
2. A layer name - by defaulr it is the source name until you change it in the timeline.
if you change a layer name in Ps, it will update the source name in Ae, not the layer name. If you want the layer name to reset to the source name, you can simply delete its name In the timeline and press enter.

Yes. That's what I just said. Never said it was a bug.

I was referring to the original post and conversation that followed. I think a further explanation to what exactly was happening was needed here.

Tuttle harry is the correct answer:

1. Highlight the text layer

This is SO SO useful and I always forget how to re-link it. I think it should be a hover tooltip!
You will find people almost wilfully misubderstanding the question, but we get there in the end.
So much love to everyone who tries to help every time.
Thanks from me

P.S.
I just did this, then forgot you double click the Layer Name to start typing in the Comp window.
If you rename in the Time line it does not update text.
If you want that to happen, pick whip Source Text to the Layer Name so you can type the layer name to change the text.
Which SOMETIMES you do.
Depends on your exact workflow at the time, which system saves you valuable seconds or concentration error minimisation.
As you were...

That doesn't work for me, combination of Enter, space, enter does nothing, it just let the blank name...
I have to delete the whole name and then it does the trick! Cheers boyz

Backspace. Not space. Delete. As in delete its name so it goes back to looking to the text source.
If you use a wacom, it's usually safer to select things from the timeline left name anyway in case you move it by mistake.
I know renaming the layer breaks the connection, but I think there may be other ways to do it.
Fix it with return DELETE return and smile.
