After Effects CS5 Won't Start on Mac OSX 10.6.3

Guest
May 12, 2010 May 12, 2010

Production Premium arrived yesterday, and having tried all the software, After Effects is the only one that won't start.

I'm pretty sure my computer meets the spec needed.

I have Intel Core 2 Duo processor, at 2.66 GHz, with 4GB of RAM and loads of hard drive space. Premier Pro works fine, it's just After Effects.

Help!

Have you installed the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update? That update fixes a lot of problems.

Hi Todd,

the version I have is 9.0.2.42 (AE CS4) after the Adobe Updater updates it just a moment ago(It was originally 9.0.0.346 installed from a DVD).

It still doesn't start even after I'ved installed this update.

Is there an equivalent fix for CS4?

Thanks!

shu

Then why are you asking this on a thread about CS5 not starting?

Please don't do that.

If you want help about CS4, please start a thread that isn't about CS5.

Sorry, cos I was trying so hard to find a solution the whole day that gets as close to the problem to mine (including reinstall, repair perm, etc) - and this is thread is the one that is closest except for the version - everything it says is very very similar, and usually a bug can be common across versions, especially it being one version difference. Ok thanks for your help and will start a new thread.

After Effects warning: could not rename the file '/Users/Austin Joe/ Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/10.0/Workspaces.177.44311092801.xml' to 'Workspaces.xml'.

Delete the entire preferences folder and then start After Effects:

/Users/Austin Joe/  Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/10.0

After Effects will rebuild the preferences files, and you should be able to start.

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the application.

Make sure that you isntall the application using an account that has administrative privileges so that the installer and application can write the files that they need to write.

When i click on After Effects, nothing pops up but an error message that says if i would like to reopen or close. If i click close then it just shuts down after effects, if i click reopen it will re-open after effects but then the same happens, it is like a loop.

After reinstalling the software, try setting up a new user account on your

machine and running the software from there as this will help to identify

whether there is something wrong with your normal account or if the

problem is with the installation itself.

I am having similar problems to those described above. I have Master Collection CS5.5 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8. The full suite had been running fine until late October, at which point After Effects stopped loading on launch. Illustrator and Photoshop start and run without problems, but After Effects will/would not launch. It hangs while loading MediaCore. When I launch in safe mode, I get an error with the Verdana font, so I've addressed that problem as suggested above (see my notes below). I successfully launched After Effects one time last week before uninstalling the Master Collection and taking all the steps outlined below, but the software has since refused to launch at all. I have not made any major system changes in the past two months. The most recent change I've made that might be relevant is the installation of FinalCut Pro, but the two packages have coexisted without incident since summer. I regularly use VLC, Quicktime Pro 10 and Quicktime Pro 7, but I have not made any changes to these recently.

Here are the steps I have taken:

  • delete user preferences
  • remove VLC and Quicktime
  • run software updates on Mac OS; my last update was a Java patch in late October; roughly coincides with when my troubles began. There are no ATI/Radeon patches available for Mac OS 10.6 that I can find, and I believe that the system's "Software Updates" provides such updates
  • completely uninstall and reinstall Master Collection and install software updates using "Updates" within Photoshop (have done this sequence three times)
  • remove font list ("AdobeFnt11.1.lst" and "AdobeFnt11.lst") in /Library/Applicatio support/Adobe/PDFL/9.0/fonts
  • use Appzapper to remove After Effects before reinstalling it
  • boot in safe mode and launch either from .app file or from Package Contents/MacOS/ terminal executable
  • remove MediaCore components completely by placing them on the desktop

Please help. I can not afford to lose production time on this machine.

I'd try a re-install. I'd also use the Adobe CS cleaner tool, then re-install.

I appreciate your taking the time to reply, Rick. I did a complete reinstall several times after using the Adobe CS cleaner tool.

I thnk that you have installed some 3rd party video software or codec pac that is fouling things up. Make sure that there are no non standard codec pacs installed or active on your system.

You might also check for come corrupted fonts. Sometimes bad fonts will cause AE to hang on startup.

Rick, You seem to have some experience with this. How would I identify codecs or fonts that might be causing a problem?

Ned,

I had a similar problem to you some time ago, but I was running CS5, the solution for me was to run Disk Utility and to click on Repair Disk Permissions. I was able to run After Effects thereafter.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, Steve. I should have mentioned: I repaired disk permissions with Disk Utility, as well. I have done everything that Rick is suggesting, also.
