Hello community,
I opened a .aep file that I hadn't opened in 2 to 3 months. Upon launch, I didn't receive any message indicating missing files, and I don't have any Photoshop files. However, when I start the preview, it works for a while then abruptly stops and displays an error message.
I cleared the cache, uninstalled and reinstalled After Effects, updated Camera Raw, but to no avail.
I'm lost because I can't seem to solve this problem. I've searched everywhere on the internet and haven't found a solution to my problem, so I hope you can help me here. Thanks in advance.
I had the same issue. Mine came from an image file inside my composition that had the extention .avif. Once I replaced that with a .jpg problem was solved.

You mentioned using Maya file sequences in your composition. These are labeled as “Photoshop Files” by After Effects. Ensure that your Maya sequences are correctly formatted and compatible with After Effects. If you’re experiencing issues with specific sequences, try re-rendering them from Maya or checking their settings.
Sometimes, a file may become corrupted, leading to this error. To troubleshoot, open the problematic file in another software (such as Adobe Photoshop) and save it in the same format or a different image format supported by After Effects. This process can often resolve issues related to file corruption. You mentioned that restarting After Effects sometimes makes it workable again. While this isn’t a permanent solution, it might help temporarily. If the error occurs consistently, consider the other steps mentioned above.
Remember to check the rendering settings in Maya and ensure that your file sequences are correctly exported.

I never mentioned the use of Maya file sequences, but thank you for your response.

This feels like a fluke, but I'm going to let you know anyway.
I'm having the same issue, and after clearing cache, restarting, etc. to no avail, I tried opening in a prior version of AE (23.6.5).
It yelled at me that this wasn't allowed, so I reopened my file in v24.3. This is the same version that had been giving me issues.
For some reason, everything is now working fine. No more error message. This seems too dumb to be a solution, but I wanted to provide it on the off-chance that it works for you.

Scratch that. It only functioned for 5min.
Best of luck!

When this happened to me I found what seems a quick fix. I found couple of DNG Photoshop files were not rendering on the preview. (Comp display was just Black). When I reloaded the DNG files in the Project window it showed up again and did not get the File error again.

Yes! if you have something different from JPG, choose Reload Footage on the project window.
Thanks! Worked for me too.
