After Effects Keeps Changing Video Length to 1 Second

New Here ,

I had a licensing error on after effects so I decided to Uninstall and reinstall the program mid project. It was all working fine until I reopened my project on the newly installed after effects and the videos in the compositions I made either completely disappeared or is stuck on one frame. This is really frustrating as I spent days on this project so far.

Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks

Edit: I've actually researched this a bit more and it turns out after effects is turning the imported clips into only 1 frame long, while the video i import is actually 2 minutes long?! I've tried it in several different projects but the same result each time.

Please help with this

This is probably user error having to do with the wrong option checked when you import. Without details, I can only guess but I think it has something to do with importing as an image sequence or some odd nonstandard video format.

I was thinking it was something to do with that but, The project was saved before I reinstalled after effects and once it was installed I opened the project without changing any settings and most my videos were set to "Duration 00:00:01" Would this be something to do with an update?

Without any actual info abou the items in the project nobody can tell you much. Of course it's likely that this may have soemthing to do with the changes for CoDecs and Quicktime, but who's to say? You simply haven't offered any real info.

What do you suggest I do?

I used the same clips before and they were fine.

Its when I drag them into the project media section it says on the right side beside the name Duration 00:00:01 when its a 2 min video.

Its always stuck on the first frame when I make it into a composition and when I extend the composition duration the clip stays at 1 frame.

I've tried replacing the files and even reinstalling after effects again but no luck. It seems to be only mp4 files that are causing this but then again 2 of them still work so I'm really not sure, I can send a screenshot if you'd like?

In the project panel, right-click on the clip, and choose Interpret Footage > Main.
Let's see a screenshot of what's in there. Is it possible it's interpreting your footage at some strange framerate?
I see this is likely screen capture footage, which can sometimes be created in strange codecs, variable frame rates, etc.
Do you have any other clips that were captured this same way? If so, are they having the same issue, or just this one?

Hmmm, ok.

A few more thoughts/questions for you:
- Are you able to open these clips correctly in Premiere?
- When you previously opened them successfully in After Effects, was that the same version that you're currently using? (And that version is...?) Something has changed, we just need to figure out what.
- If the size isn't prohibitive for you to upload, I'll be happy to see if the clips have the same issue on my system.

I'm going to again hypothesize (as did Rick and Myllenium) that this has something to do with the codec you're recording these with. The fact that different clips with (theoretically) the same settings are behaving differently is strange, but who knows. It's possible it's in a format that's not officially supported, or that ceased being supported with the removed Quicktime support in the most recent release. Moving forward, you may need to simply tweak your recording settings to ensure they're compatible.

In the meantime, some possible workarounds to salvage this existing project, in no particular order:
- Check to ensure your video card drivers are up-to-date.
- Run the clips through something like Handbrake to re-encode into a format AE will be happier about.

- Save your AE project to an earlier version (under Save As), and install that earlier version if you don't have it. See if it works correctly in there. (If so, you have your "why," at least.)

- Obviously I can't tell much about your project from the info I have, but at first glance, I'm a bit puzzled what you're doing in AE that you couldn't be doing in Premiere. If you're just doing color treatment and editing, it would likely be much more efficient to be doing that work in Premiere.

Thanks, Kyle. I had the same issue as exodus, ran the problematic file through the ol' Handbrake and that did the trick. Bummer that we need to add an extra step due to an anomaly yet to be determined, but hey... if it works, it works. Thanks again.
