After Effects only runs as a Background Process?

New Here ,

I've suddenly had problems opening files/etc. in After Effects (16.1.2 Build55). I've noticed that when trying to do anything with After Effects, in the Task Manager (Windows 10 64 bit, 32 GB RAM, RTX2080), the process in open under "Background Processes," NOT under "Apps." Other Adobe programs are open under "Apps" like normal. Further, 1) there can be MULTIPLE instances of After Effects open here! And 2) It refuses to go away - right-click -> "End Task" does nothing.

Is this normal....?

It's not normal and those "background processes" are likely simply orphaned calls to sub-processes and files, i.e CoDecs, drivers and DLLs at the system level. Start by checking your user privileges and have a look at the event viewer to check for potential warnings and errors that might offer some clues.
