Dear all,

I'm having some trouble with after effects. It seems like its getting slower. I'm working with the Asus Zephyrus g15 with 32gb RAM, intel core I7 10875H, nvidea Gefoce NTX 2070 super, wich should be nice for the animations i'm doing (no 3d). Ive preserved 29gb RAM for AE, and my cashe folder is on my local harddrive while the project is on an external ssd. I just opened a new project, and a 4K video (mp4) has a hard time to playback at full resolution and constantly stops the music. No fx no nothing and still he's struggling. Is this normal? I have the feeling that with these specs it should be playing back buttery smooth (like it does in premiere with 4k) but maybe i'm wrong. Let me know, thanks!

Yeah, you are wrong.

AE works internally very diffent as Premiere. You won't get any realtime preview if the footage or animation isn't pre-rendered (green bar) and even than it can stutter.

Lowing the preview resolution is the intended workflow, actually.

Pay attention that the footage is on a fast drive with fast connection, too.

As @Martin_Ritter already said, you seem to have completely wrong expectations/ a wrong understanding of how AE's previews work. If you aren't already, use proper RAM previews, not direct playback. If there are still technical issues, more infor is required on your comp contents, preview settings, type of footages and so on. Reading the online help on this stuff may be advisable.

Thank you for the answer!

I was wondering. How do I switch from direct playback to proper RAM previews? Thank you in advance!
