This functionality was removed with the update to Ae2025 and it is quite annoying. Allow us to drop files from folders on our system into the empty project window (below the hamburger menu). There's no need to remove this and it would significantly speed things up when working with lots of folders/files and you can't just drag-drop a file.
This issue was reported in version 25.2 and was filed as a bug. The bug has been fixed in version 25.3. Here are more details: https://adobe.ly/40tjiDa

Hey Oscar,
I'm sorry to hear about this. Does this happen specifically when you drag and drop files on the Project panel? If you drop them on your Composition, does that work? Please hover the pointer to the menu bar at the top and go to Edit > Preferences > Startup & Repair > Start in Safe Mode. Enable the option to disable third-party plugins when prompted. Let me know if you still see the issue in that launch instance.
Thanks,
Ishan

Thank you! I just launched in safe mode (all plugins disabled) and the problem persists.

Drag and drop individual files or folders is working just fine on my Mac using 25 and 25 beta.

It does work on Mac, it appears to be a Windows problem in 2025. I thought it may be an issue on my part but starting in safe mode hasn't remedied it.
