Audio Spike on playback

When I hit spacebar to get playback in AE 2017 (14.2), the volume spikes for a split second. I'm literally scared to playback my work because I'm afraid of blowing my eardrums out.

You need to be much more specific. We know nothing about your actual audio configuration, preview settings etc.. This most likely has nothing to do with AE at all. On a hunch I'd say you're using those awful audio "enhancements"/ virtual surround presets and they cause feedback due to buffer delays.

Seems to have been resolved by disabling the Waves MaxxAudio Pro "Playback" option, so even with no information you still had the answer.
