Can’t change shape of shape layer

I'm working in a template and I'm confused by what I am seeing.  I’m wanting to give the edge of this shape layer some curves and all I see for paths is the one going across the middle of the screen. It’s the “BLUE LAYER”. What am I missing here?

It's not really clear what you did. This is simply either a line or an extremely compressed rectangle path. Other than that, if you are having issues with bounding box overlays getting in the way you may want to turn them off in the comp viewers view settings.

I didnt do anything, it is in this template I am using.  I cant figure out what I am looking at.  There is no clear way to manipulate the shape other than the existing effects on the layer.  No handles, no anchors, nothing to work with the shape.

I suppose you need to expand the Path Parameter to look for how it is animated or if the points of this shape layer are controlled via expressions with some nulls in your comp.

The only thing your screenshot tells us is that there is a path in Blue Layer Shape 1, Trim Paths has been animated, and the Fill effect has been applied to the layer. All other properties appear to be at their default values. The way to figure out what is going on in a layer is to select it, press 'uu' then look at what you see. If you can't figure it out, send us the entire screenshot.

I can only guess that you have some kind of a vector path and you are trying to animate a stroke. The screenshot of the Comp panel shows the layer handles, not the path, but that is what a horizontal open path with no stroke applied would look like. If the Path was revealed in the timeline and selected, we could see the vertices. If the modified properties of the layer were revealed we would see the width of the stroke. You have given us nothing to go on.  It's also a very good idea to embed your screenshots using the toolbar.

When you are having problems with a template a link to the template will also be very helpful. There are hundreds if not thousands of very poorly designed and ill documented templates out there. You might just have one of those.
