In that view you've uploaded you are looking at approximately 12 frames - half a second - of timeline. Are you sure that's not the problem?
you may disselected the layer and keyframes that you want see their graph. for example you animated a layer by scale option of that layer, you should select the scale option to see its graph

Ah I see ok thank you! However I have another problem ... I'm trying to curve the graph here but it doesn't come up with the round handles you can do this with? I can pretty much zoom in all I want but it's not giving anything. I want to make the transition smooth so that theres no black background shown when I switch between clips. Thanks!

It may be because you haven't added keyframes OR you haven't highlighted your keyframes.
For me it was because I didn't have keyframes when I thought I had it. Also you can click on the "fit selected to view" or "fit all graphs to view" icons at the bottom when you're on the graph editor. There's a small bar that you can use at the bottom to adjust the size of the graph. Hope that helps! If it doesn't them I'm not too sure how else, but that's all I know
