I'm trying to import a psd into after effects to animate individual layers, like I've always done, but I'm just getting a single, flat psd layer. Even if I choose to import as comp and select retain layer sizes. Help?
Probably you are using a CMYK PSD file. This is a common problem. Open the file in Photoshop and go to Image > Mode to check the color space. If you are using other than RGB, AE will not import Layers.

"A" solution was finally found. This is one of the challenges of troubleshooting (and software development in general) - you're literally trying to account for the nearly-infinite amount of variables that might be at play on users' systems!

OK- this worked for me too- many thanks!
As annoying as the way some of Adobe's products work sometimes, Autodesk is 100x worse! Of course they haven't updated their Compositor Link in years, so it figures it ends up breaking part of AfterFX!
So the solution from the other thread was: "I had a plug in installed called Compositor Link, that comes with 3ds max. When I uninstalled the plug in everything worked fine again. If you have this plug in installed I bet it is your issue."
Just a note, there is no "uninstall" for this plugin either. You need to manually delete the following from AE.

This is still an issue. AE 2018 is hanging when attempting to import a layered PS file whether it is in RGB mode or not. At least it is on my computer at work. At home I'm not having this issue. WTF.

Fist time posting on any thread sites, so please forgive me if I'm doing this wrong.
Anyway I had the same problem. Usually changing to RGB fixes it, but this time nothing worked.
In the end I just saved my PSD file with a different name and dropt it in AE. This finally worked.
Hope this can be of use to someone.

Hi - had similar issue even with rgb file. Created a layered pdf version of psd file & imported it into AI - seems to have worked.
