Change canvas dimensions without resizing elements?

I want to change a 1920x1080 to 1080x1080. Nothing would get cropped -- everything that matters is in the center 3/5 of the comp. Is that possible?

How about ... creating another comp -- comp2 -- that is a square and placing this one -- comp1 -- in comp2 so the empty space on the sides of comp1 are "cropped" out?

Either approach will work just as you have described and yield the results that you're looking for.
