Hey guys I’ve never used Photoshop for animation and I have only ever used it for basic things I am trying to teach myself to use it. I am looking to create some art for various projects and as an intro/outro clip for YouTube. I’m trying to create something like this

ALCHEMY ENGLAND E374 DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS EAR-WRAP INSTRUCTIONS - YouTube

As you see it’s an iridescent “petrol on water” rainbow type effect etc. Any tips or suggestions what i might do to begin creating a similar effect? I had posted in Photoshop forum and was advised to come here. I am kinda lost as to where I should even begin, the programmes I have are Ps Ae and Sony(Magix) Vegas Pro 15. Any help advice or tips would be great, thanks much in advance everybody.

Hi! You'll do this in After Effects. A tutorial on the basics, to get you started, is here: Use alpha channels, masks, and mattes in After Effects

Here's the instructions though.

1) Use the text tool to make your type as you like it.

2) Import you petrol rainbow layer. One way to make an easy one is create a solid, add fractal noise, then add colorama. Then change the colors in the Output Phase.

3) Place the rainbow layer above the text layer.

4) Change the blending mode to Stencil Alpha OR dupl

5) Use a mask on the rainbow layer to do the reveal animation.

I should clarify, that in the sample you've given, they use a video as the rainbow layer. It's ink in water that gives the whispy look. What I've given is a very basic starter on that - how to get the colored look on the text.

And thanks for the clarification and the explanation of the provided sample I wasn’t exactly sure as to what exact effects were used in that.
