Hi, I've been trying to animate single frame brushstrokes and copy them then paste it onto another solid (black) layer. However, when I paste the keyframes, they will not show up, despite the brushstrokes showing up. I have tried pasting the keyframes from the start of my timeline and at other places, but the keyframes dont seem to show up. Am I doing anything wrong?

You are trying to copy keyframes from a video clip to a solid?

Let me try a different angle. What exactly are you trying to do? You have a video with some brush strokes but I'm not sure I am seeing what the problem is. If you want to apply an effect, it will show up on everything including the video? So where DO you want the effects to show?
A little clip would be helpful.

An alternative workflow may be to select the layer you want to paint on, duplicate that layer, pre-compose the duplicate, open the pre-comp in the Layer Panel, add any layers you might need to the pre-comp, then open the nested comp in the layer panel, do the painting, then go back in the pre-comp and turn off the layers you don't want.
Another option is to just duplicate the layer you want to paint on, give the duplicate a different name, open the layer in the Layer Panel and select the original layer as the source if you are cloning, then paint away and choose Paint on transparent.
Still another option would be to duplicate the layer that you have painted on, duplicate the layer, then pick some footage from the project panel and hold down the Alt/Option key while you drag the layer to the comp. This will replace the original source with a new one but keep the paint and any other effects you have applied. As long as the size of the replacement layer matches the original any transform effects or animations will still be properly applied.
All of these techniques are easier if you start in the Paint Workspace.
As Eric said, if we knew exactly what you were trying to do it would be easier to give you some reasonable suggestions.

Hi, sorry i can’t record a clip right now but i will later, but i will probide a tutorial I am trying to follow, but my struggle is that i would like the brushstrokes on a different layer alone (but i am unable to copy and paste the keyframes), so i can add effects, such as glow, without affecting the actual video clip (what i’m drawing on). I have tried turning on transparent layer, although the keyframes are still there, i can’t see anything appear on the composition window. Thanks for the reply though, it was very helpful.

This is the tutorial i am following. What i would like is an effect on the brushstrokes only, not the entire video. I have tried paint on transparent layer on a duplicated clip, but although i still see the keyframes, nothing actually appears when i play on the composition window.

Greetings! Usually I don't enter Adobe forum, but I was looking for the solution of the same problem as we both have. And I found it! You simply have to duplicate your video, put it on top of the comp and turn on "Paint on transparent" option. And you can add multiple effects without affecting the video itself.

The problem with that quick tutorial is the way she described copying and pasting an effect. Sometimes if you select a specific property in the effect and copy and paste you don't always get the other properties. You have just experienced a common problem you get when you try and follow tutorials presented by amateurs. Their lack of experience and some luck or not remembering exactly what they did lead you down the inefficient and sometimes dead-end workflow path. Her use of the blend modes was also only one option, personally, I would have used Add because it has more range, and there are different looks you can get with glow if you have a transparent layer and you use the Alpha Channel. The use of Stroke on a mask path is also a limited workflow. I would have drawn a shape layer path and added shape layer animators. You have a lot more options. These are the chances you take when you try and follow tutorials presented by amateurs and keep going over the same steps again and again instead of looking for other, better, tutorials.
If all else fails and you really need to get a paint effect on a solid layer you can always select the footage with Paint applied in the timeline, Select a solid you have created in the Project Panel, hold down the Alt/Option key and drag the solid to the timeline. This will just replace the footage with the solid and everything else will stay the same.
