crashing when pre-composing

Community Beginner ,
Apr 06, 2018 Apr 06, 2018

Hi there, since yestarday (when I updated afterFX) I am not allowed to pre-compose layers as the software crashes.

Any solutions?

Thanks in advance

Mauro

Without actual system information and other details nobody can tell you much. Start by turning off GPU acceleration and updating your graphics drivers.

Yeah My problem solved by this method, thanks, Just press WIndow + Shift + Control + B and thats it. Your Gpu will reboot and pre comp and solid layers will start working.

Try a couple of things:

1.- Go to Edit > Purge > All Memory and Disk Cache before precomposing.

2.- Delete the After Effects Preferences. As soon as you launch AE, hold CTRL/COMMAND+ALT+SHIFT. You will be prompted to delete the preferences. Once deleted, try to precompose.

I am having the same problem.
I deleted my preferences and purged All Memory and Disk Cache.

I am running the latest version of AE 15.1.0 on a Mac.

My specs are below.

Please help!

Describe the crash with more detail - any error messages. Does AE stall or exit?

Please list any effects you have on the layers you've tried to precompose.
Have you tried nesting, as a workaround?

Specific action-

Select multiple 6 layers (have tried multiple different layers and only selecting one)

Right click to Precompose

Precompose window pops up

When I click to make it a Precomposition, program crashes.

No error messages, just blinks out.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program.

Still crashing.

Nesting is working.

Straaaaannnnge...

So ... when you select the 6 layers; create a new comp and paste them there and then nest this comp, things are OK? It's a bit of a hassle for sure but at least you can get some work done.

Back to your issue, what effects if any have you applied to these layers?

Have you tried the PreComp shortcut? What about the Menu command to pre-compose. I'm trying to see if it's a strange issue with the contextual menu instead of the actual command to precompose.

Thanks Roland!

It still works with command from menu and the shortcut.

To confirm, the crash when precomposing ONLY happens when you use the contextual menu to access the precompose command?

No error msg shown. It just crashes. I was just precomposing a layer with a vertical movement in order to mask it on the new comp.

How are you precomposing, it seems like Zefrey has no issues when precomposing via shortcut or the  Layer Menu. Please confirm this on your end.

Greetings all,

We are tracking this crash through our Crash Reporter system and are working hard to identify the root cause of the issue (thank you to all that have reported it!).

I can reproduce the crash by invoking Pre-Compose via the Context Menus - right clicking on a layer in the Composition and/or Timeline Panels. I have not been able to reproduce the crash invoking Pre-Compose from the Layer Menu or via the Keyboard shortcut.

I suggest using the Layer Menu or the keyboard shortcut to invoke Pre-Compose as a workaround until we can turn around a fix for this (or until someone reports that they are crashing by those methods as well).

Thx!

OSX 10.13.1 MacBook Pro 2017 Identical system.

I cannot reproduce the bug with any type of layer, any number of layers, or any options from the keyboard shortcut to right-click to Menu Layer>Pre-compose. Maybe it has something to do with your preferences or GPU acceleration. I've been trying for 10 minutes. Even uninstalled AE and re-installed.

Do you have any other versions of AE installed? I know lots of folks running AE on a Mac and none of them are having the problem. This makes me think it is a conflict with some other software or maybe a 3rd party plugin.

No, it's definitely a bug we introduced in 15.1 and are working rapidly to fix.

So I gave it another try. Turns out if you select layers, have the Timeline active and right click over the layers in the right side of the timeline you get an immediate crash and AE disappears. Anywhere else and it seems to be working just fine.

If you right-click in the switches column or use the Layer>Pre-compose, or use the keyboard shortcut you should be safe. I did not find the bug because I cannot remember the last time I right clicked on the right side of the timeline over layers that I want to pre-compose. Maybe this will help others. Use the keyboard shortcut, menu or right click over the layer names and you should not have a problem.

Any update at all on this issue... as it's very annoying. I'm using the keyboard shortcut for "pre-composing" at present as a workaround, but would be nice to now the other more menu based option was working too.

Is there an ETA on this bug being resolved...?

Yep using the top Layer > Pre-Compose menu results in no crash rather than right-clicking.

Thank you.

I had AE crash on me earlier today when I pre-composed using the context menu. Just updated, pre-composed the same way and it's working fine - no crash.
