Creating a shape oriented to a Null

Sorry I'm sure this is a simple problem, but I'm stumped! I'm fairly new to AE, but have used 3D CAD for many years - which may well be the root of my difficulty....

If I have a null object at some arbritary 3D position and rotation combination, what is the easiest way to draw a shape oriented and positioned exactly to it, in the same plane? In CAD, it would be a matter of selecting the correct workplane. I understand parenting etc, but I want to draw shape(s) on the exact same plane/location as an existing null object.

Create your 3D Null. Create a new shape layer. Make the layer 3D, then Shift + Parent the Shape Layer to the 3D Null. This will snap the shape layer to the same position and orientation as the 3D null. You can then draw paths or create parametric shapes using the shape layer tools, and they will be coplanar with the Null.

Since you asked - on a related note, is there a simple way that I can then view normal to the null object (and new shape)?
