Creating organic color animation

Hi guys,

I'm trying to create an organic color animation. The way I'm going about it now is drawing several frames and frameblending them together in after effects. However this is a very unnatural workflow and its really hard to get the flow of the animation right.

Here is an example: Comp 1 2 kort - YouTube

I'm looking for a different way to achieve this effect where its easier to control the movement of the animation and has an overall more sensible workflow.

Do you guys have any ideas how I might be able to achieve this?

It doesn't necessarily have to be in after effects.

There's a bunch of different ways you could approach this. I've done similar work in the past using shape layers with black and white gradients. I'd then apply the tint or tricolor effects too them to control the colors for each layer. you can also layer feathered masks onto the shape layers to control soft vs sharp edges. after that, you could try playing with blend modes to find what you're looking for. though based on the sample you posted I'd stick to normal blending and just blur the heck out of everything.
