Exporting to AME from After effects is creating additional folders and files

This is a bit of s illy and noob question I'm sure, but I can't find anything online and Adobe Technical support havne't been able to help either.

When I export a composition or project to Adobe Media Encoder (exporting as mp4) a folder with the suffix _AME gets created and inside it there is a duplicate of my AEP file. What exactly is this and can I switch this feature off? All I want to do is export the omposition as an mp4 without having these additional folders and files created.

Using the most up to date versions of all software at time of posting this.

Cheers for any insights anyone has 🙂

This is a safeguard as the actual file that gets rendered is always the temp duplicate to prevent problems with concurrent access to files and caches. This is pretty much how any of the DynamicLink-based workflows like using AE projects in Premiere or vice versa work. So no, you can't exactly turn it off and have to get used to it. The only "oddity" in your case, if you will, is that the folders get created in your project folder since usually it happens "quietly" in the system's temp folders and the Adobe sub-folders. But then again it could be perfectly normal if you use an external or network drive...

Thanks for the info. I am indeed using an external drive. I would assume that its would also be strange that the exported mp4 files are being saved into this newly created folder too? If its supposed to happen in the background, that seems like a strange place for the output file to go?

No, we cannot turn this off.

Yes, we can delete the temporary After Effects project folder and/or files after the encoding process has finished in Media Encoder .

Good news, though. exporting to MP4 without leaving After Effects is avaiable in the public beta (in other words, no _AME folders if we use this new option).

Exporting H.264 from the After Effects Render Queue (Beta)

That's great Warren, thanks so much for link! So essentially this folder and duplicate AEP is a temp file? Its just bizarre to me as I mentioned in my reply to Mylenium, the actuall mp4 video is getting saved into this folder as well. I'll get a look at the link you sent, would be great not to have all these additional folders and files when just needing to export a video file.

Cheers

The _AME folder is the default location for the output.

We can set another location prior to starting the export.
