I'm trying to figure out how this WW2 map animation revealing Japan's occupation of China was done in Johnny Harris's video. Can anyone here in this forum tell me what method you would use in After Effects to do this?
Thank you very much in advance.

@ninose11 I think I found your answer! Check out this tutorial. This is a guy who was hired by Johnny to do some animations at one point. He shows the reveal effect. Hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out, ninose11.
I think shape animation is used to reveal the map and scaled to mimic zoom out. But there are multiple ways to do this. Here's a video from Johnny Harris that might help:https://adobe.ly/3F7NxYi
Hope it helps.
Thanks,
Nishu

Hi Nishu, thanks so much for your feedback. Oh yes, I'm quite familiar with that Johnny Harris video. I actually can't wait to get hold of Geolayers 3, 😀. Waiting for the next sale. Regarding what you mentioned about "mimic zoom out", can you elaborate a little further on that? To mimick a zoom out, do you think he might have pickwhipped the invasion mask to the camera? Thank you again for your help.

Great question! It looks like he's duplicated the original map, and the underlayer (duplicated map) has different patterns, instead of solid colors. Then there seems to be a track matte that's revealing the new underlying patterned map slowly. Are you still working on this, trying to figure it out?
He also has some behind the scenes for creating maps on his Patreon. It's only $2/month. I subbed today to get some insight for a map project I'm working on and saw your post. Hope this helps...
