I'm trying to figure out how to do a fake camera or lightning flash on a person or subject in After Effects?  I'm meaning like a flash bulb on an older style camera or lightning strike that would light up parts of a person.

This is just an color correction layer with a mask on the persons face and other image parts which would get brighten up by a flash.

You can also make it way easier by just increasing brightness of the scene for 2 or 3 frames. Don't make it all white, but give it a good over exposure. Keep in mind that old flash bulbs are fading out slowly and their light is warm.

To make it look realistic, you will need to determine WHERE the flash bulb is located, and then mask the level-changed portions of the shot to reflect that direction.  You can't just momentarily make the image bright and expect it to look like it's from a flash bulb.
