I am working on a project and need to have a animated infection counter and a map that shows the speading infection. I'd appreciate anyone who can point me to a template or tut that could help me. tried googling but nothing appropriate comes up on searches.
Thanks in advance.
The counter is easy just using a text layer and an expression or tying the value to the value of a slider. Search Dan Ebberts Universal counter and you will be on your way. There is also a Numbers effect that will generate several different types of counters very easily. The fonts are limited and so is the range, but there is nothing keeping you from stacking up multiple counters to get really big numbers.

The spreading infection can be done in a bunch of different ways. You can create animated gradients to be used as track mattes to reveal underlying layers. You can use particle systems with track mattes. You can simply add repeaters to shape layers. It all depends on what kind of look you are after.
If you had some kind of example it would be a lot easier to point you in the right direction. I've created everything from simple line drawings with animated colors and borders to topographically accurate 3D maps showing traffic flow projections, to animated maps of distant planets that expand from spheres.
If none of what I have said makes any sense to you then you'll need to spend several hours learning the basics. You can start here: Basic AE
